Doctoral Student and Adjunct Instructor, John Macready, Wins NEH Grant
John MacreadyJohn Macready, University of Dallas doctoral student and adjunct instructor of philosophy, has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant to study totalitarianism during the summer of 2012. The third year doctoral student of the Institute for Philosophic Studies, will spend five weeks at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. studying The Political Theory of Hannah Arendt: The Problem of Evil and the Origins of Totalitarianism with 15 other colleagues from around the country. They will work under the direction of noted Arendt scholar Kathleen Jones, professor emerita of women’s studies, San Diego State University.
 
Macready will stay on the Bard campus from June 24-July 27. Work accomplished during the seminar will be presented at Bard College, and posted on the NEH website.

Junior Economics Major Wins Arthur A. Smith Memorial Award
University of Dallas junior James Kerin's essay, “The Panama Canal Expansion: Texas, the Time is Now” was among the winners of the Arthur A. Smith Memorial Award, sponsored by the Dallas/Fort Worth Association of Business Economics (DABE). He received his award at the DABE's annual luncheon on April 27, 2012.

James is majoring in economics and finance.

English Major Wins Evelyn Waugh Society Student Essay Contest
English major Robert Sherron won the Evelyn Waugh Society student essay contest, which is held annually for undergraduates who wish to study, in greater depth, the works of 20th century British novelist Evelyn Waugh. His essay was on Waugh’s Sword of Honour trilogy, and will be published in the Evelyn Waugh Newsletters and Studies.

Senior English Major Awarded Ella Caruthers Porter Scholarship
Senior English major, Kathleen Finders, has been named the Lakeside Browning Club's Ella Caruthers Porter Scholarship recipient for 2012. The Lakeside Brown Club was founded on Jan. 23, 1923 by civic and cultural leader Mrs. Ella Caruthers Porter as a literary, social and philanthropic organization.

The club named a scholarship in her honor, directing that gifts from the scholarship fund be made to women undergraduate students of literature or fine arts attending college in the Dallas area. Kathleen will be presented the scholarship by Mrs. John Castle, scholarship trustee, at the April meeting of the club.

Latin in Rome Program Participant Featured in Latest Issue of Johns Hopkins Center Youth Magazine
An article by a 2011 participant of the University of Dallas Latin in Rome program has been featured in the November/December 2011 edition of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Imagine Magazine. This is the second time a student from the program has been asked to write an article for the magazine, which reaches some of the country's most gifted high school students.

As the high school summer programs approach their 20th anniversary in 2013, Shakespeare in Italy, Latin in Rome, and Arete, along with past programs Thomas More in England, Winston Churchill in England, King Arthur in England, continue to yield increasing numbers of quality students who choose to enroll at UD.

Nicholas Caluda and John Yarbrough Qualify for 2012 National Moot Court Competition
This past weekend the University of Dallas Moot Court team traveled to Baylor University Law School to participate in the regional qualifier for the national moot court tournament. Our team of Nicholas Caluda and John Yarbrough finished 4th out of 18 teams in the preliminary rounds, and qualified for the national tournament. 

The 2012 American Collegiate Moot Court Association National Tournament will take place Jan. 13-14, at Chapman Law School in Orange, Calif. Nicholas Caluda is a junior Politics major from Metairie, La., and John Yarbrough is also a junior Politics major, from Corrales, N.M. 

This marks the 7th consecutive year that the University of Dallas Moot Court program has had at least one team qualify for the national tournament.

Michael Kelsey Awarded Prestigious Research Fellowship
Michael Kelsey, recent graduate of the Department of Politics, has been awarded the prestigious one-year Research Fellowship in American Studies at the Center for American Studies, Heritage Foundation.
 
The Research Fellowship in American Studies is for recent college graduates interested in American political thought, history, and public philosophy and how those ideas and principles relate to the issues and debates of current American politics. The Fellowship is designed to advance promising graduates who are interested in the prudent application of enduring principles to modern public policy debates and are committed to restoring limited constitutional government in the United States.  
 
The B. Kenneth Simon Center for American Studies sponsors lectures, organizes seminars, and crafts publications with the objective of teaching up-and-coming and current leaders - those who shape opinions and make policy now and in the future - about the foundations of liberty, with a focus on the principles of the American political tradition, the fundamentals of economic freedom, and the basics of conservative thought and public policy.

Field Ecology Research Team in Costa Rica
A team of University of Dallas students and faculty will be traveling to Arenal, Costa Rica during the Mayterm to continue an ongoing study of habitat restoration in tropical forests. You can follow their progress and see photos and data from the project at their website www.ecomapcostarica.com.
 
The team will be on-site in Costa Rica from May 20 – May 27.

Theresa Smart Named Scholar Athlete of the Year
Senior Theresa Smart received the UD Scholar Athlete of the Year award for a record three times.  She was honored at a banquet on Friday, May 6 at the Maher Athletic Center.  Theresa maintained a 4.0 gpa throughout her undergraduate career as a Spanish/politics double major.

Linh Nguyen Awarded Sr. Clodovia Lockett Scholarship
Linh Nguyen is the 2011-12 recipient of the Sister Clodovia Lockett Scholarship. The award is made each year to a junior pre-med student who has demonstrated academic excellence and interest in a career in medicine. Semi-finalists are selected and interviewed by a group of UD alumni.

Psychology Students Present Research at Southwestern Psychological Association Meeting
Dr. Gilbert Garza, alumna Brittany Landrum '08, and 13 current UD psychology students presented their research at the 57th meeting of the Southwestern Psychological Association in San Antonio held on April 7 - 9.  These students are part of a long standing tradition of UD psychology students presenting original research at peer reviewed conferences.

Along with Garza and Landrum, juniors Elizabeth Stephens and Katherine Dautenhahn presented talks at the conference.  Juniors John Petruccelli, Julia Dougherty, Christi Koenig, Alexandra Liebenow, Adrienne McCabe, Jeremiah Jourdan, Sabrina Sifuentes, Jessica Mollner, and seniors Matt Peisen, Melanie Neal, and Samantha Davids presented posters of their research.

Senior Therese Couture Receives Ella Caruthers Porter Scholarship
Senior English majorTherese Couture received the Ella Caruthers Porter Scholarship for $1,000 from the Lakeside Browning Club.  The scholarship will be presented on Apr. 19.

Therese is also a recent Fulbright Scholar.

Senior Anthony Sigillito Awarded at American Physical Society Meeting Senior Anthony Sigillito Awarded at American Physical Society Meeting
Senior physics major Anthony Sigillito was awarded the Outstanding Student Presentation Award at the Texas Section of the American Physical Society fall 2010 meeting in San Antonio, TX. His oral presentation "The Design and Fabrication of Bismuth Hall Effect Biosensors" stood out among the more than 100 presentations of students who participated in the competition. Anthony received a $200 prize for his accomplishment.

BGSA Names Fall 2010 Travel Stipend Recipients
The Braniff Graduate Student Association (BGSA) announced the recipients of its fall 2010 travel stipends.  The purpose of the stipends is to off-set the costs of attending academic conferences.  This semester's award recipients are Peter Geromel, who presented an essay: "Jonathan Edwards' Use of Arrows as Imagery in Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" at the Jonathan Edwards Society Conference in Massachusetts (The Sanctuary of the First Churches, Oct. 2010); Rachel Kilgore who wrote an essay: "Uncommon Conventions: An Innocent Reading of Manners and the Gothic in Austen's Northanger Abbey" and attended The Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture's 11th Annual Fall Conference in Indiana (University of Notre Dame, Nov. 2010); and Ann Marie Klein who wrote, "He who "heeds but hides": The Vocation of the Worker in "Harry Ploughman" and presented at The Gerard Manley Hopkins Society International Conference in Washington (Gonzaga University, Jul. 2010).

Senior Noah Jouett Receives Major Award
Senior Biology major Noah Jouett recently received the O.B. Williams Award at the American Cancer Society for Microbiology meeting held at Texas State University.  He earned the award for his oral presentation "Stress Response Variation in Spore-forming Soil Bacteria."  After UD, Noah plans to attend medical school.

Juniors Kevin Burns and Mark Kubisch Advance to National Moot Court Tournament
Junior politics majors Kevin Burns (Paris, TX) and Mark Kubisch (Bloomington, IN) recently competed in the Texas Undergraduate Moot Court Tournament at Texas Tech Law School on Oct. 22 and 23.  Kevin and Mark finished as #1 seed in the qualifying rounds out of 24 teams from eight schools including TCU, Baylor and Texas A&M.  Though they advanced to the final round, they did not win, however they qualified for the national tournament in January sponsored by the American Collegiate Moot Court Association.  This is the sixth consecutive year that UD has placed at least one team in the national tournament.

Incoming Freshman Receives Byrd Scholarship Incoming Freshman Receives Byrd Scholarship
The 2010 San Marcos Baptist Academy (SMBA) valedictorian, Margaret Mary Boylan, recently was awarded the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship.
Boylan will be eligible to receive the $15,000 scholarship for up to four years. She also was awarded a President’s Scholarship for $16,000 at the University of Dallas, where she plans to major in journalism when she attends the school this fall.

Traci Metting Receives the Texas Business Hall of Fame Awards
Traci Metting, student at the University of Dallas recently had been awarded a $10,000 scholarship toward her degree by the Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation. A luncheon ceremony will recognize all the recipients’ November in San Antonio.

Baseball Trio Honored by USCAA
Sophomore outfielder/infielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth H.S.), freshman outfielder Adam Farris (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian H.S.), and junior pitcher Philip Carkhuff (Marietta, GA/The Lovett School) were honored by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) at seasons end. Shelburne and Farris were named honorable mention All-American while Carkhuff was selected as an Academic All-American.

Theresa Smart Brings Home Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year Award
Junior cross country runner, Theresa Smart (Peoria, IL/Richwoods H.S.), is making her mark on and off the field again earning her second straight University of Dallas Student-Athlete award. The three-time cross country letter winner competed in six races for UD in the 2009 campaign with bests of 23:12 in the 5k race and 28:42 in the longer 6k run. The recognition of Smart as UD’s top student-athlete represents the second consecutive for the Politics and Spanish major. Smart was also inducted the newest class of Phi Betta Kappa at a ceremony in the middle of May 2010.

Monica Abbracciamento, an honor roll student at the University, has been selected to work at the Museum/Center this summer as the 2010 ExxonMobil intern. She was selected from a pool of 30 applications to participate in the program.

May 2010 Graduate Completes Research at Marine Lab at Duke University
Jack Boyle, May 2010 graduate, completes his research at the marine lab at Duke University on molt behavior in blue crabs. Jack’s previous research was conducted in the microbial ecology lab at Marquette University, where he studied the microbiology and chemistry of archabeacteria and other species inhabiting hydrothermal vents in Yellowstone National Park

Drama Student Awarded Stage Manager Observership at the Dallas Theatre Center
Amy Pen, junior drama major, has been recognized for her excellence within the drama department. In fall 2009, she was the production stage manager (PSM) for ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and in spring 2010, she was PSM for ‘Playboy of the Western World.’ Pen was awarded a Stage Manager Observership at the Dallas Theatre Center for her achievement as PSM. She will intern in stage management with Barrington Stage in Boston this summer.

Spanish Major Awarded Hispanic College Fund Scholarship
Saul Almeida, Spanish major, was awarded the Hispanic College Fund Scholarship. Saul was awarded the maximum gift of $5,000 toward his studies at the University of Dallas.

Politics Major and Student Government Presidents Senior Seminar paper accepted for Publication.
Justin Dugyon, senior politics major and student government president, had his Senior Seminar paper accepted for publication. His paper, “Private Military Companies: Shifting International Norms Regarding Mercenaries in 21st Century Warfare,” appeared in The Orator Undergraduate Journal for Political Science.

Softball Outfielder Named USCAA Academic All-American
Sophomore outfielder Jessica Mollner (St. Paul, MN/Covent of the Visitation School) wrapped up another great season on the field and in the classroom in by garnering Academic All-American honors from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. The undeclared undergraduate student batted .380 (30-79) in 32 games for the UD softball team. Among her 30 hits were 2 doubles, 7 triples, and a homerun for a .620 slugging percentage. She also drove in 13 runs, scored 27 times, held an on base percentage of .459 and finished the year with 10 stolen bases. In her two seasons with the team, the speedster from Minnesota has 37 stolen bases.
