Student Employment FAQs
Answers to most questions can also be found in the
Student Employment Handbook
.
How do I get a job on-campus?
The majority of on-campus positions require a work study award. You will need to check the job boards on the HR website under Student Employment to see a list of available positions. Most positions will usually request that you apply within. Bring your schedule so you can determine if your availability meets the needs of the department. Once you've received confirmation that you have been hired by a supervisor, you will need to complete a new hire student employee paperwork packet available in the Office of Human Resources. By law, this must be completed within three days of your start date as an employee. You will be required to present identification for completion of the I-9. You will also need your bank routing number and account number to sign up for direct deposit. If you do not complete this paperwork within three days, you will be asked to stop working until you do.
How do I get Work Study?
Work study is awarded by the Office of Financial Aid to eligible students. Work study is a need-based award, and completion of a FAFSA is required to determine eligibility.
Work study is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis so returning students must complete their FAFSA by March 1 of each year in order to be considered for an award for the following year.
*Once you've been awarded Work Study, you will have a limited amount of time to obtain a job before your award is cancelled. For current deadline dates, contact the Office of Human Resources or the Office of Financial Aid.
How do I know if I have received an award?
If you receive an award, it will show on your financial aid letter, and you will find it in your UD online student account.
I don't have Work Study. May I be reconsidered?
Yes, you may be reconsidered for Work Study if you have a FAFSA on record in the Office of Financial Aid and you sign up on the
Work Study Wait List
. The wait list will be reviewed and Work Study will be awarded according a student's financial need and the order in which they signed up on the wait list.
I don't have Work Study, can I still get a job on campus?
There are a small number of student jobs that are funded through department budgets, or by on-campus contractors, such as Aramark (Cafeteria) and Follet Bookstore.
Department positions are usually given to students at the sophomore level and above who have knowledge, experience or skills in a certain area, and are usually for shorter periods of time than Work Study positions.
Aramark and Follet both accept applications throughout the year, though most of their hiring is done at the beginning of each semester.
The University also posts off-campus employment opportunities for students outside of the Human Resources Department and the Career Services office.
