Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race |

Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery

Deadly Medicine is a traveling exhibit of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum that emphasizes the role that the pre-war German medical community played in the Holocaust. From 1933 - 1945, Nazi Germany carried out a campaign to "cleanse" German society of individuals viewed as biological threats to the nation's "health." Enlisting the help of physicians and medically trained geneticists, psychiatrists, and anthropologists - many of them proponents of eugenics during the 1920s - the Nazis implemented public health and population policies that began with the sterilization of the mentally ill and others deemed genetically unfit. During World War II, Nazi eugenics culminated in the near annihilation of European Jewry.
The exhibition raises ethical questions for the 21st century about the rapid advances in genetics, medicine, and the value of individual lives, especially those considered to be disabled. The exhibition provides a historical context and perspective from which to examine these timely issues.
