Course learning objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:

Understand the goals and benefits of effective succession planning
Be familiar with the steps necessary to establish and maintain a comprehensive succession planning program
Have tools for designing and implementing a formal succession planning program
Be prepared to identify potential successors, assess candidate readiness, and prepare individual development plans using a variety of activities and methods

Rosemary Maellaro is an Assistant Professor of Management and the Academic Director of the Organization Development MBA program at the University of Dallas’ Graduate School of Management. Additionally, she manages an independent organization development consulting practice, which specializes in change management, team building, and leadership development. She has more than 25 years of corporate experience, including senior HR management positions in the high tech, hospitality, and retail industries. Dr. Maellaro received her undergraduate degree from Loyola-Marymount University in Los Angeles; an MS in Organization Behavior Management from the University of Texas at Dallas; and a Ph.D. in Human and Organization Development from Fielding Graduate University.

Influencing Skills for Effective Leadership

Many scholars and professionals argue that the essence of effective leadership depends upon the ability to influence others. In this interactive and fast-paced program, explore how influencing, or "selling," differs from telling and coaching strategies. Discover how influence is effective in situations that vary depending upon the levels of power and authority held by the participants. Discuss the reasons that influencing is consistent with contemporary workplace practices that stress teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation. Learn the advantages of obtaining commitment to action plans rather than simple compliance. Build and practice a five-step model for influencing others applied to an actual situation that you have been, or will be involved with. Discover how to overcome objections to close a persuasive case successfully.

Implement the desired management culture based upon influencing
Distinguish among various management strategies on a situational basis
Use influencing as an alternative to power and authority
Apply and demonstrate in general business/management practices fact-finding skill, influencing steps and handling objections steps techniques.
