Professor Emeritus Lyle Novinski
Eternal Cities 2010 begins with four nights in Rome, the Eternal City, celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the University's famous Rome Semester Program. The last night in Rome, June 20, will feature a gala party at the University's permanent Rome Campus, the Eugene Constantin Campus, otherwise known as Due Santi, for Saints Peter and Paul who are said to have stopped in the region.
St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Galleries, Forum-Colosseo area, St. Paul's Outside the Walls, painting museum Doria Pamphili, the Jubilee Church, and the catacombs are a few of the things on the Rome visit list. But one can't know Rome in a lifetime. Write lyleski2@verizon.net with suggestions about things you'd like to see.
The Roman Forum
A brief visit to Orvieto and its golden cathedral is contemplated. Pope John XXIII remarked that, on Judgment Day, God will send his angels to earth to transport the fabulous cathedral façade to heaven. And the wine is excellent, too.
Eternal Cities will then spend six days exploring the richness of Campania and Puglia, Southern Italy, often called Magna Graecia as it was settled by the Greeks beginning as early as 8th century BC.
The influence of the many peoples that have swept over Southern Italy is still evident. As an article in USA Today reports, Southern Italy has it all - great art and architecture through the ages, fabulous food and drink, variety of landscape and pristine beaches, the nicest people in Italy - and few tourists! The tour will include Montecassino, the great Benedictine Abbey so fought over in World War II, ancient Herculaneum, a drive along the Amalfi coast, Paestum (fabulous Greek temples),Taranto, home of the Tarantella, Lecce, called "little Florence", and its amazing carved churches, the conical trulli houses of Alberobello, medieval Bari, and St. Nicholas' church.
