FRANCIS M. LAZARUS


PROFESSIONAL
EXPERIENCE:

2004 - UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS, Irving, Texas
Present President

The President is the Chief Executive Officer of the university and responsible for the fulfillment of the university’s mission. The President implements policies approved by the Board of Trustees, presides over the internal operations of the institution, and represents the university to external constituents. The President has special responsibility to secure adequate resources to support the faculty, administration, and staff in meeting the academic goals of the university.

The University of Dallas is a Catholic university of 3,000 students. The faculty, administration, and staff together number 300 full-time and 200 part-time employees. The budget of the University of Dallas in 2004 is approximately $33 million.


1996 - UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO, San Diego, California
2004 Vice President and Provost

My responsibilities as Vice President and Provost included service as the Chief Academic Officer and second officer of the University, serving in the President’s stead whenever she was absent from San Diego. I was responsible for the five schools and colleges of the University, as well as the areas of Sponsored Programs, the Library, Information Technology Services, Continuing Education, International Services, The Registrar, Career Services, and Community Service Learning. I co-chaired the University Budget Committee, led the Council of Deans, and served on the Cabinet and the President’s Advisory Council. I was deeply involved in identifying and cultivating prospective donors and directing the institution’s lobbying efforts.

The University of San Diego is a Catholic university of 7,100 students. The
faculty and Academic Affairs staff number approximately 630 full-time and
250 part-time employees. The budget resources of the Academic Affairs
area total almost $90 million.

1988-1996 MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Vice President for Academic Affairs


My responsibilities as Vice President for Academic Affairs included providing leadership to the twelve degree-granting colleges, schools, and programs of the University and to its eight academic support units. I directed the University’s strategic planning effort and coordinated the North Central Association affirmation of accreditation activities. I chaired the Academic Senate, served on various governance and budget committees and determined fund raising priorities for the academic sector.

Marquette University has 8,000 undergraduate, 2,500 graduate and 750 professional school students. The University’s faculty and academic area staff number approximately 1,000 and in 1996 budgetary resources for Academic Affairs totaled approximately $65 million.

1980-1988 UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON, Dayton, Ohio
Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

My responsibilities as Dean of Arts and Sciences included providing leadership to eighteen academic departments and programs, faculty development, curricular development, and facilities planning. I served on the University’s Strategic Planning Committee and was active in enrollment management and fund raising. The University of Dayton’s College of Arts and Sciences in 1988 had 3,000 undergraduate and 400 graduate students. There were 234 faculty, 65 staff and total budget resources of $13 million.

1979-1980 SALEM COLLEGE, Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Associate Academic Dean

My responsibilities included planning, coordinating and managing the academic budget of the College ($1.5 million in 1980), directing the College’s advising system and the January Interim Program. I also functioned as the Director of Institutional Research and part-time Coordinator of the Continuing Education Program.

At Memphis State, my responsibilities included learning the process of administrative decision-making, staff support to the Vice President and long-range planning. I attended meetings of policy-making councils and served as project officer on staff studies in student retention and faculty staffing.
