Application Essay
The essay is the personal touch in a student's application. Use this opportunity to say something new about yourself. It should complete the profile we gain from your grades, scores, recommendations and talents. The quality of your writing is, of course, important, but the essay should tell a story, about you. Do not attempt an autobiography! Rather, keep it focused on an episode, issue or experience that has been influential in your life. Essays that are clear and compelling provide an even deeper insight into the applicant. Note that strong writing skills are essential to academic success at UD. The essay is evaluated for evidence of critical thinking and writing skills.
You will write one major essay and a few complementary short answer essays as part of your application process. We believe essays are an important indicator of your ability to think critically and write clearly and fluidly. The essays are also our chance to get to know you, the applicant, on a more personal level. It is our one chance to hear directly from you. Please take the time to think carefully about what you want us to know about you, and then write your essays in a way that reflects this information. There is nothing inherently better about a funny essay or a serious essay. Please stay true to yourself, write in your own voice, and write about topics that are relevant to you.
