2007 University of Dallas Regional Overview

The University of Dallas enjoyed great success with the first University of Dallas Regional Ceramics Competition. Val Cushing, the juror for the 2007 competition, was most impressed by the quality and variety of the works submitted. He felt it was an excellent showcase of the strong educational foundation and health of the ceramic arts community in our region.

"Best of Show" award winners for the 2007 competition were Barbara Frey, Commerce, Texas and Laura Kukkee, Maryville, Missouri. As part of their award, Frey and Kukkee were each given a one-person show. Both shows were held early in 2008 in the Upper Gallery on the University of Dallas campus.

In addition, Mr. Cushing selected 24 of the 62 participating artists to receive an "Award of Merit" recognizing these artists' vision, creativity, and achievement. The selected artists were Jake Allee, Stuart Asprey, Kenneth Baskin, Chris Blackhurst, Rebecca Boatman, Ron Boling, Aaron Calvert, Chris Campbell, Amanda Dawn Chatoney, Carol Cook, Beverly Fetterman, Carol Fleischman, Roy Hanscom, Amanda Jaffee, Michael Lancaster, Michael Lemke, Mack Liao, Ginny Marsh, Marianne McGrath, Rebecca Roberts, Laura Robertson, Fred Spaulding, Amelia Stamps, and Hunter Stamps.

I would like to express my thanks to the Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery Manager, Sherry Giryotas for undertaking the monstrous task of coordinating the Regional Competition. Ms. Giryotas was assisted by Ceramic graduate students Candy Austin, Jenny Pilon, Mandy Stigant, Chris Blackhurst, and Paul Fehlberg. It was gratifying to see the professional way in which the show was handled. The opening reception and gallery presentation was stunning. A special thanks goes to Joyce Dempsey, Art Department Administrative Assistant, for her continued support.

The University of Dallas Regional Ceramics Competition will send out a "Call for Entries" in the summer and early fall of 2008 for the next competition. I look forward to displaying your new work in the 2009 University of Dallas Regional Competition.
