2008-09 Golf Season Recap

UD Golf Finishes Record Breaking Year
The University of Dallas men's golf team completed one of its most successful seasons in recent years. The team, relying on its great deal of experience, set two team records while also winning one tournament as a team under first year head coach Jarred Samples. In the team's first appearance at the North Eastern Athletic Conference championship in Cazenovia, NY, the team finished in third place while setting the two day team record with a score of 653. The day after the NEAC championship, the team set the one day team record with a 312 in route to a winning the Utica College Invitational. Although the UD golf team has captured several duals and tri-matches titles, the winning of the Utica College Invitational was its first tournament win since 2002. Beside the personal accolades and team records set, the team finished the year with a 339 average, its best finish in several years.

The team was led by senior Ryan Hogue (Amarillo, TX/Amarillo H.S.), who capped the year off with a first place finish in the Utica College Invitational when he shot a 76. Hogue also earned second team NEAC honors in his last year of play for the University of Dallas. He finished the year with a scoring average of 82.5. Hogue finished with a career average of 84.0 and his medalist honors in his final tournament were a fantastic way to finish. Freshman Ryan Tewell (Bedford, TX/Lawrenceville H.S) was named the team MVP on the year, leading the team in most events. His year was highlighted by finishing with second team NEAC honors and an 82.8 average. His 82.8 average led the team and the main reason he came away with MVP honors. Junior Kyle Callahan's (Prairie Village, KS/Rockhurst H.S.) year was capped off with a tie for third place in the Utica College Invitational. He finished the year with an 85.5 average on the year. Junior Cory Grant (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S) played his best when it mattered most, earning third team NEAC honors at the conference championship. He finished the year with an 85.9 average. Grant along with Callahan will be the two returning seniors on the team next year. Sophomore Brady Bulmanski (Batesville, AR/Batesville H.S.) made his triumphant return to the golf team after being away for a year by finishing in a tie for third at the Utica College Invitational. He also won the Rhema Bible dual by shooting a 74. Bulmanski finished with an average of 86.6 and will also be returning next year.

The team will be losing only senior Ryan Hogue for the 2009-2010 season and hopes to build on its late season success. The two team records may be short lived if the team continues to play as well as they did in its final two tournaments in upstate New York.

Golf History

The golf team was formed in 1959 under Coach Pat O'Connor. The team took a break in the late eighties but has been going strong since 1993 when Coach Jim Jackson reformed the team. Highlights for he program came in 2001 when the team set a school record for most wins for a season, and in 2003 when they had the highest win percentage in school history. In 2008-09 the team set 2 records (low round and low 2 round), competed in the NEAC Championships in Cazenovia, NY, placed 3 individuals on the NEAC all-conference teams, won 1 dual meet, and took home first place in the 6 team Utica College Tournament.

Traditionally, the team has mainly competed in meets held within the state of Texas, but they do travel out of state on occasion, heading to the likes of MO, AR, and NY for tournaments.

This year, the team is an associate member of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). They will compete in the 2009 NEAC Golf Championships on April 23-24 in Cazenovia, New York.

Jerrad Samples currently leads one of the largest golf teams in UD history. Coach Samples can be reached at 972-721-5028.
