2008-09 Golf Preview
On September 27th, the University of Dallas Golf Team will open the season against Southwestern University in Round Rock, TX. With the return of the 2008 MVP Robbie Burton (Round Rock, TX/Stony Point H.S), and letter winners Paul Bechter (Bermuda/Saltas H.S), Kyle Callahan (Shawnee, KS/Rockhurst H.S), and Ryan Hogue (Amarillo TX/Amarillo H.S), the team has a very optimistic outlook for the season. Also returning to the links for the Crusaders are, Brady Bulmanski (Batesville, AR/Batesville H.S), and Cory Grant (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S). According to new head coach Jarred Samples; the team should be very competitive this year, due to all the returning golfers, and to the addition of seven new members. Joining the team this year are Andrew and Eric Bechter (Bermuda/Warwick Academy), Michael Horan (Fort Worth, TX/Southwest H.S), Lincoln O'Brian (San Antonio, TX/Central Catholic H.S, Colin Puthoff (West Lake Hills, TX/Home School), Ryan Tewell (Bedford, TX/Lawrenceville H.S), and Johnny Gallagher (Ocean City, NJ/The Heights). With a total of thirteen members, the team is one of the largest in school history, so it is no surprise that Samples is "very excited to go out there and see what these guys can do." As junior Kyle Callahan put it "we're going to be good this year, there are a lot of guys out there who can really play."
Golf History
The golf team was formed in 1959 under Coach Pat O'Connor. The team took a break in the late eighties but has been going strong since 1993 when Coach Jim Jackson reformed the team. The team has played well as of late, with the record for most wins and winning percentage being set in the 2001 and 2003 seasons respectively.
Jerrad Samples currently leads one of the largest golf teams in UD history. Coach Samples can be reached at 972-721-5028.
