2007-08 Season Review

The University of Dallas 2007-08 mens basketball team finished the season 11-16 and was highlighted by several individual accomplishments. Senior forward Joe Packard (Lindale, TX/Lindale H.S.), senior forward Nick Netsch (Flower Mound, TX/Marcus H.S.), and sophomore guard Jeff Pritchard (Frisco, TX/Frisco H.S.) were all crucial to the teams success. The trio played in every game, and was the recipient of several highlights throughout the year.

Joe Packard was honored by his teammates as MVP for the season. This marks the second year in a row that Packard received the teams MVP award. Early in this season Packard was named the Tournament MVP for his efforts in the 10th Annual Legg Mason Winter Classic, along with teammates Netsch and Michael Ricketts (Grand Prairie, TX/Bishop Dunne H.S.). Packard was twice named the AD3Is Player of the Week, and was also honored as a second team member of the AD3Is All-Independent Team at the end of the year. Packard led the team with 508 points for an average of 18.8 points per game. He also led the team by shooting 52.4% (174-332) from the field. He hauled down 143 rebounds and added 28 steals this season. In his 2-year career, Packard is in 9th place in the UD record book for free throws made with 242, and 5th on the list for points per game with a 15.7 average. He also finished his career in 5th with a field goal percentage of 52.5%. The marketing major is a 2-year letter winner at UD.

Nick Netsch finished the season with 297 points for an 11 points per game average. He led the team in rebounds with 175 for the season. Netsch was one of the top leaders in assists with 48. He finished his 4-year career with 198, good enough for 7th place in the UD record book. Netsch added 31 steals, the second highest on the team. For his career, Netsch is 7th on the UD record list for games played with 102. He is 5th on the list for free throws made with 285, 7th on the list with 500 rebounds, and 6th on the list with 47 blocks. The Business Leadership major is a 4-year letter winner at UD.

Jeff Pritchard was honored by the AD3I by being named the associations Rookie of the Year. After the Birmingham Southern College Tournament, Pritchard was named to All-Tournament Team. He was also named to the BSC Black Tie Club Classic All-Tournament Team for his efforts later in the season. Pritchard finished the season with 270 points and averaged 10 points per game. He led the team in steals with 58 during the season. The Business Leadership major is a 1-year letter winner at UD.

Sophomore guard Jim Norton (Louisville, KY/Holy Angels Academy) and sophomore guard/forward Travis Ekmark (Yokosuka, Japan/Nile C. Kinnick H.S.) Two players who missed the beginning of the season due to their attendance of the study abroad program in Rome, Italy were. The were also vital to the team once they returned. Jim Norton (Louisville, KY/Holy Angels Academy) and Travis Ekmark (Yokosuka, Japan/Nile C. Kinnick H.S.) made a commendable effort to work hard after their return and helped their team. Ekmark played in 17 games upon his return to the team and finished with 101 rebounds. Despite only playing half the season, Ekmark led the team in blocks with 20 and added 34 assists. Norton played in 16 games upon returning and finished with 137 points and averaged 8.6 points a game.

After 9 seasons head coach Brian Stanfields record is 111-121, and has a winning percentage of 47.8%.


Packard, Pritchard Named to AD3I All-Independent Teams

KANSAS CITY, MO.--- Doug Hammond, who led Green Mountain College to a 21-5 record and a first-place finish in the AD3I Northeast Regional Championship game, headlines the All-Independent Mens Basketball teams announced today by the Association of Division III Independents.
Hammond, a senior forward-center from Brooklyn, NY, who averaged 23.4 points (10th in Division III) and 14.8 rebounds (second in Division III) per game, was named the player of the year. Hammond led the nation with 114 blocked shots (4.6 per game) and posted double-double outputs in scoring and rebounds in 22 of 25 contests.
Leading the second team of the All-Independent Team is Joe Packard, a senior from the University of Dallas. He attended Lindale High School in Lindale, TX and will be graduating from UD in May. The University of Dallas had another one of the team members earn the rookie of the year honor. Jeff Pritchard (Frisco, TX/Frisco High School) is only a sophomore at UD and already earning a prestigious name for himself by averaging 10 points per game. Other persons sharing the award with Pritchard include: Fabian Ferreira, Green Mountain College (14 points per game); Brendan Kordana, Southern Vermont College, (16 points per game).
The All-Independent Mens Basketball teams were selected by the mens basketball coaches from member schools of the Association of Division III Independents.

Crusader Men's Basketball Program History

Men's Basketball became a varsity sport in 1916 when it was coached by Charles Crowley, the coach for 3 seasons. During the 1991-92 season Head Coach Jake Bethany led the team to the NAIA District 8 Playoffs. The team now competes at the NCAA Division III level as an independent and reached the organizations playoffs during the 2003-04 season under current Head Coach Brian Stanfield. In the last game of the 2006-07 season Stanfield recorded his 100th win at the school. He holds the schools' coaching victory record at 100, 36 in front of coach Bethany.
