Crusaders New Defensive Additude Leads To 4-1 Record

After only 5 total victories all of last season, the University of Dallas Crusaders have opened the season with a 4-1 record. With 8 returnees from last years struggle, this years Crusaders, with the injection of some key freshman and a dedication to defense, have brought discipline, patience and tenacity to the first 5 games of the year.

After a tough opening night loss in Sherman, Texas to the University of Texas-Dallas, the Crusaders were weary of going back to their old ways, however, the next night Senior C Jason Bassett took over the inside game grabbing 8 Rebounds and going 9-11 for a team high 22 points, including a key shot from 3 point range. The pinnacle moment in the see-saw battle down the stretch came from Junior F Joe Packard with his patented fadeaway jumper with 1.1 seconds to go in a 86-85 Victory over the University of the Ozarks and the Crusaders haven’t looked back since.

UD posted impressive back to back road victories in the Rhodes College Thanksgiving Classic in Memphis. A shooting clinic from Freshman G Jim Norton who went 7-7 including 4-4 from behind the arc led the Crusaders with 18 points disappointing the home town Rhodes College Lynx 69-57. The next night 6'3" Senior F Nick Netsch led the Crusader in-huddle chant, "Leave it on the floor" by example by grabbing 16 Rebounds and adding a block in 38 minutes, while Tourney MVP, Senior F Robert Nickell was 1 of 3 UD players in double digits adding 19 points to defeat the Millsaps Majors from Jackson, Mississippi 73-64.

UD followed up their most impressive defensive performance of the year versus the Southwestern Pirates who went into the game averaging 71.6 points to go along with their 4-1 record. The Crusaders held them to just 17 first half points and led at one point by as many as 23 in the 58-46 Win. Offensively Senior C Jason Bassett led the Crusaders with a strong effort in the post with 14 points and 5 rebounds while Freshman PG Alex Moorehead shot 3-6 behind the arc finishing with 13 points and 3 rebounds.

Colorado College Outlasts UD

Colorado Springs, CO – Colorado College guard Lincoln Deffenbaugh scored the go-ahead basket with nine seconds remaining to lift Colorado College to a 53-50 victory over the University of Dallas in a Division III men’s basketball game on Friday night at CC’s Reid Gymnasium.

After Deffenbaugh put the Tigers ahead, senior forward Michael Nash drew a charge on UD’s Michael Cusack to nullify the Crusader’s chance to re-gain the lead. Sophomore guard Kyle Keefe nailed a pair of clutch free throws to give CC a three-point lead, and Cusack’s desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark.

Nash led the Tigers with 11 points and added seven rebounds. Senior forward Adam Mares had 10 points and game-high with eight rebounds and four blocked shots.

Freshman guard Robert Nickell made three of the four three-point attempts and finished with a game-high 15 points for the Crusaders. Nickell’s last try put UD ahead 50-49 with 2:36 to play, but the Tigers defense stepped up and shut down the Crusaders for the rest of the way.

Junior forward Jason Bassett added 11 points and had a team-high six rebounds for UD.

The 3-20 Crusaders wrap up the season with one final road trip. UD faces Penn St. New Kensington Fri., Feb. 17 in Upper Burrell, PA, and Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH on Sat., Feb. 18.

Crusaders Place 3rd in Lopata Classic, Netsch Makes All-Tournament Team

In the 22nd Annual Lopata Classic held on the Washington University campus in St. Louis, the Crusaders left with third place in the Round Robin event. The jet-lagged Crusaders opened the weekend with a 43-67 loss to host and eventual tournament winner (80-65) Washington University on December 2. The suffocating defense of the Wash. U. Bears limited UD to 30% shooting in the contest. J.K. Nickell led the Crusaders in scoring in the opening round defeat.

The loss paired the Crusaders with the Swarthmore College Garnet Tide in the Tournament’s Consolation game. While Washington U. and Wisconsin Lutheran College battled for first place, the Crusaders left “the Gateway to the West” with a convincing 66-53 victory over the Garnet Tide. With a 7-point lead to open the second half, the Crusaders turned up the heat by shooting 57% in the second half. The hot-shooting Crusaders were led in scoring by Jason Bassett (14) and Nick Netsch (20). The duo added 9 and 7 rebounds respectively. Michael Cusack led the team with 10 rebounds.

Netsch was named to the All-Tournament team by opposing coaches for his game-time heroics in leading the Crusaders to a third place finish. He scored 24 points, grabbed 10 boards, and recorded 4 steals in the two-day tournament.

On tap for the 2-6 Crusaders is a road game against Dallas foe Dallas Christian College. The game will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Dallas.

Crusaders Lose Two in Tennessee

It was a tough weekend for the University of Dallas men’s basketball team at the Rhodes College Thanksgiving Classic. At the November 25 – 26 tournament, the Crusaders suffered two losses in as many days. The first defeat by Kalamazoo College was particularly one-sided. Although UD got respectable performances from Jason Bassett, and Michael Cusack, both of whom scored 12 points, the rest of the team struggled on offense. The impressive defense of Kalamazoo might have caused this dismal offensive day. The Hornets hounded UD all day, managing 5 blocks and 14 steals. Regardless of whatever the exact cause might have been, the game ended in a 70-42 Hornets victory.

UD fought a much better fight in their second tournament game, which also unfortunately ended in defeat. This time, the Crusader’s opponent was their host, Rhodes College. In this game, the Crusaders were much more efficient offensively. Though no player put up an astounding number of points, quite a few players made significant contributions. UD’s leading scorer in this game was Corey Loverson, who put up 12 points. Jason Bassett was next, scoring 10 points. Finally, Mike Smiljanic and Nick Netsch chipped in 9 and 8 points respectively. Nick also managed to grab 8 rebounds. A player who additionally deserves to be mentioned is Michael Cusack. Despite scoring only 3 points, Michael pulled down 11 rebounds, with 4 of those being offensive. This improved scoring can probably be partially traced to a much better shooting night for the Crusaders. Though they only shot 42% from the field for the game, this shows a 10% improvement from the previous game. UD’s three-point shooting was also more accurate. Although UD was only 2 for 9 from behind the arc in the first half, the Crusaders were able to make great strides in the second half, connecting on 5 of 10 three-point attempts. However, regardless of this enhanced scoring, UD could not seem to find an answer for Rhodes College’s Rami Almefty. This offensive terror racked up 29 points in 33 minutes. The Lynx’s second best scorer was Matthew Jakes, who dropped 10 on UD. This contest concluded in a 65 – 59 victory for Rhodes College.

UD Loses Opener in Defensive Battle

The University of Dallas was unable to hold on to a 26-25 halftime lead as the Austin College Kangaroos spoiled the Crusaders home opener 47-44 in taking the first game of the UD Tip-Off Classic.

Down by one at the half, Austin College turned up their defense by limiting UD to 22.2% shooting in the frame. The ‘Roos also improved their accuracy from the field to 44.4% behind the shooting of James Hill, who was 6 of 7 from the field for a team high 15 points. Hill also tied Anthony Holman for the team lead with 8 rebounds.

Junior Corey Loverson’s double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) and senior Michael Cusack (8 points, 7 rebounds) were the major contributors to the Crusaders offense before it suffered a second-half collapse.
