Crusaders Lose a Close One

The University of Dallas lost the first game of the doubleheader this afternoon 3-1 to Chapman University. Despite getting one of the best pitching performances of the year from freshmen Phillip Carkhuff (Marietta, GA/The Lovett School), the Crusaders couldn’t quite get over the top. Carkhuff pitched a complete game allowing just three runs while striking out four. He induced three timely double plays, which helped eliminate the little trouble that he ran into. The Crusaders’ run resulted from very timely hitting from senior catcher Fraser Holmes (Grand Prairie, TX/Grace Prep Academy). Holmes singled home sophomore Scott Atkins (Pearland, TX/Pearland H.S.) after Atkins and junior shortstop Tom Fogerty (Parker, CO/Ponderosa H.S.) had started a two out rally with consecutive singles. In the end, the Crusaders couldn’t overcome the pitching by Chapman, leading to the close loss. The team hopes to steal a game from number 1 ranked Chapman later this afternoon in the second game of the double header.

Hackney Wins First of Double Header with a Walk-off

The Crusaders looked like they had missed their opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning after junior shortstop Tom Fogerty’s (Parker, CO/Ponderosa H.S.) record setting triple. However freshman rightfielder Viron Hackney (The Woodlands, TX/College Park H.S.) saved the day with a walk off homerun to end the game.

Fogerty started the seventh with his fifth triple of the season and tenth for his career, breaking the career record for triples formerly held by Tapley Holland. A failed suicide squeeze led to Hackney approaching the plate with 2 outs. Hackney crushed a fastball over the left field wall despite a stiff breeze coming in from center field.

Also hitting for the Crusaders were sophomore leftfielder Mike Fattaleh (Phoenix, AZ/St. Mary’s H.S.), sophomore second baseman Scott Atkins (Pearland, TX/Pearland H.S.), senior catcher Fraser Holmes (Grand Prairie, TX/Grace Prep Academy), sophomore first baseman Zach Atkins (Grand Prairie, TX/South Grand Prairie H.S.), freshman third baseman Kyle Huard (Surprise, AZ/Willow Canyon H.S.), and senior centerfielder Chad Violette (Euless, TX/Trinity H.S.). Fattaleh went 1-3 with 2 runs. Both Scott Atkins and Fogerty were 2-3 with 1 run, while Fogerty also batted in 1 run. In addition to his game saving homerun, Hackney was 2-3 with 1 run and 3 RBI.

The Crusaders won the game despite some shaky defense behind a solid pitching performance by Scott Crisp. Crisp gave way to Fogerty in the top of the seventh inning, and Fogerty shut Schreiner down in order. Crisp picked up 4 strikeouts and Fogerty struck out 2. The Crusaders look to improve upon their 20–13 record this afternoon in the second game of the doubleheader against Schreiner.
