Tennis to Make a Comeback in 2010
With the construction of a new dormitory on the site of the old tennis courts, new tennis courts will be erected north of the old courts (north of where the current baseball and soccer fields meet). Upon the completion of the new courts, tennis as a varsity sport will return for the 2010 season.
Due to poor court conditions, tennis as a varsity sport was ended at the University prior to the start of 2004-05 season. Interest has remained high for the return of the program that was started in 1974 and the team and tennis fans at the school are looking forward to a successful rebirth in 2010.
The tennis program at UD started in 1974 under the leadership of head coach Scott Bristol. The men's team best season was a 13 win season under coach Warren Jacques, and the women's best season was a 11-2 campaign in 2002 with coach John Mullman at the helm. Kendall Snouffer and Sarah Gaunt were arguably two of the best athletes in program history and were both elected in the UD Hall of Fame. Other highlights were Jerome Vanier completing the 1979 season as the runner-up for the NAIA singles championship, and the men's team was also the NAIA's runner-up for the team championship. Vanier went on the play professionally appearing in many major tournaments, including the U.S. Open.
