The 2007-2008 season was a record setting year for the women’s basketball team as they finished with a 14-13 record. Three key players for the team were honored with post season awards. Freshman Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.) was voted as a 1st Team member of the AD3I’s All-Independent Team, while senior Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.) was voted to the 2nd Team of the AD3I’s All-Independent Team. Freshman Bethany Roessler (Phoenix, AZ/Xavier College Prep) was voted by her teammates as the most valuable player for the team.Not only did Cara lead the team in both scoring (16.8) and rebounding (7.4) – but her scoring average of 16.8 ppg was good enough to make her one of the top 75 scorers in NCAA Division III this year. She also finished the season ranked in the top 75 in Division III in field goal percentage.Shanie was the 2nd leading scorer on the team with 14.7 ppg and led the team in assists (82) and steals (60). She shot 85% from the free throw line this season which placed her 25th on the NCAA DIII list. Shanie ended her career as the 4th leading scorer in Crusader history, along with also ranking 4th in assists, 3rd in steals and 1st in free throw percentage.Although Bethany only averaged 4 points per game, she contributed to the team’s success in many other ways with her all-around ability. Bethany was the team’s top defender and was consistently asked to defend the opponent’s top guard even when she was outsized. She was also 2nd on the team in assists and was the top rebounding guard.
Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus High School) recently finished up a rewarding freshman season by being named to the AD3I All-Independent First Team. Early in the season the 5’9” forward was named the AD3I’s Player of the Week. On the year the standout freshman scored 454 points and averaged 16.8 points per game. She shot 51.8% from the field (161-311) and knocked down 76.2% of her shots from the charity stripe (131-172). She also grabbed 199 rebounds, added 33 steals, dished out 26 assists, and blocked 12 shots and finished the year with 6 double-doubles. Not only did Cara lead the team in both scoring (16.8) and rebounding (7.4), but her scoring average was good enough to make her one of the top 75 scorers in NCAA Division III this season. She also finished the season ranked in the top 75 in Division III in field goal percentage.Cara is an undeclared freshman at the University of Dallas and her plans after graduation are to get a good job with her degree and eventually start a family. Her athletic goals while at the school are to win a national championship.

The Anaheim Hills, Calif., native, who leads the Panthers to their eighth straight NCAA tournament this weekend, was named the AD3I player of the year. Hayman is averaging 15.6 points per game and has made 42 three-point field goals. She leads the team in scoring, three-point field goals and ranks second in rebounds per contest (3.9). She currently ranks fourth in school history with 971 career points and is the career leader in points per game (17.3). The Panthers have won a school-record 24 games, including a current 12-game winning streak heading into today’s first-round NCAA contest.The other members of the first team include University of Dallas freshman forward Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.), Julia Fagan (Southern Vermont College), who also was named the rookie of the year; Ruchelle Austin (College of New Rochelle); Lauren Kamiyama (Chapman University); (tie) Emma Buckley (Green Mountain College); andKayleigh Calandri (UC Santa Cruz). Lincoln, NE – In a final game uncharacteristic of one of their most successful seasons in recent years, the Lady Crusaders fell to the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs 61-47. After opening the game with a strong defensive first half, holding the Banana Slugs to only 27% from the field, the Lady Crusaders went into the locker room with a 28-26 lead. UC- Santa Cruz, a team noted for their aggressive defensive playing style, only allowed 19 UD points in the second half and was able to pull ahead for the victory. Today’s game was the final one UD seniors Angel Noble (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.), Beth Teer (McKinney, TX/McKinney North H.S.) and Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.). Noble played a well-rounded game, contributing in every statistical category while Cardinal finished out her career with 10 points and 5 steals. Continuing her solid play in the middle, freshman Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.) just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds and 24 points, which set gave her 454 points and 199 rebounds in her first campaign with the team. With a final record of 14 wins and 13 losses, the Lady Crusaders’ rebuilding project looks to be right on track, as their win-loss totals have improved every year for the last three years. First year head coach Jennifer Fleming led UD to their first winning season since the 2004-05 season, and the future looks bright for the freshman class. The University of Dallas Lady Crusaders lost by 12 points against Nebraska Wesleyan University 67-55 in Lincoln, NE. Senior guard Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.) led the team with 17 points, 2 steals, and 2 rebounds in 36 minutes. Freshman forward Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.) added 11 points and 9 rebounds, while freshman guard Ashley Holder (Crawford, TX/Crawford H.S.) added 7 points.Chapman defeated UC-Santa Cruz in the other semifinal game, 56-47. Irving, TX – With less than 13 seconds left and trailing by 6 points, senior guard Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.) made two 3-pointers, including one at the buzzer to make up the 6 point deficit and force overtime. With the score tied at 66-66 to start the extra frame, the Lady Crusaders capitalized on the momentum and defeated the UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs 77-72. Cardinal, along with fellow seniors Beth Teer (McKinney, TX/McKinney North H.S.) and Angel Noble (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.) celebrated their last game of the season as part of the WBCA’s Think Pink campaign raising money for breast cancer research. Coaches, players, and spectators alike wore pink to remember those suffering from cancer. The afternoon’s leading scorers were freshman guard Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.) with 27, Cardinal with 26, and freshman guard Ashley Holder (Crawford, TX/Crawford H.S.) with 9. Cardinal finished her home career at UD in style by shooting 6 for 12 from beyond the arc, and knocking both of her free throws to finish with 26 for the night. She also had 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and shot 45% (9-20) from the field. Sczepanski also added a team leading 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block. Holder shot 2 for 2 at the free throw line and added 2 rebounds and 3 assists. Noble grabbed 5 rebounds, knocked down one 3-pointer, and added 4 assists and 1 steal for the Lady Crusader’s high-energy win.With an exciting finish for the season at home, the Lady Crusaders are off again to compete against UC-Santa Cruz, Chapman University, and Nebraska Wesleyan University in the DIII Independent Tournament in Lincoln, NE on February 29 and March 1. The Lady Crusaders lost 50-63 to the Chapman University Panthers for the second time this season.Two Lady Crusaders scored in double digits – freshman guard Ashley Holder (Crawford, TX/Crawford H.S.) with 14 points and freshman forward Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.) with 12 – and UD put up a strong fight against Chapman. The Lady Crusaders an early season loss by defeating the Southwestern University Pirates Sunday night, 68-59. The home loss (65-79) against the Pirates occurred on December 8, and was the seventh game of the young season.Leading the Lady Crusader offense in the victory was senior guard Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.), and freshman forward Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.). In losing to the Trinity University Lady Tigers, 48-85 the Lady Crusaders dropped to 12-10 on the year.Still working hard, freshman forward Meagan Johnson (Plano, TX/Carrollton Christian Academy) picked up her first double-double scoring 10 points and taking 10 rebounds. The 10 points were a career high for Johnson. She also had 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 3 steals. Freshman guard Ashley Holder (Crawford, TX/Crawford H.S.) added 6 points, 3 assists and 3 steals. Freshman guard Erika Derks (Slinger, WI/Slinger H.S.) had 3 points, 3 assists and 1 steal. The Trinity defense held the Lady Crusaders to 33% shooting for the game, while they shot 50% for the game, including 68% in the second half. In their first game since January 22, the University of Dallas Lady Crusaders lost by 20 points to the host Chapman University Panthers in Orange, CA, 53-73. With the loss, UD drops to 11-8, while the powerful Panthers improve to 17-3. Behind by 4 at the break, 29-33, Chapman’s defense improved and their scoring shooting percentage improve. UD shot at a 33% clip in the second half, while Chapman shot 60%. Three players led the Lady Crusaders in double digits. With the lopsided victory, the Lady Crusaders picked up their 11th win of the year, against 7 losses. Scoring the majority of her 25 points during the first half, freshman forward Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.) led her team off to a sound start with a halftime score of 41-21. She shot 79% from the field (11-14) and made 3 out of 5 free throws. Senior Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.) became the latest member of the 1,000 point club during Monday’s home game against the Millsaps College Majors. The 5’3” guard’s crucial layup with less than 20 seconds remaining in the game gave her points 1,000 and 1,001. Cardinal added 2 free throws that sealed the 61-58 Lady Crusader victory and finished the night with 12 points. Cardinal now has 1,003 points in her 4-year career and is tied with Alese McKinstry for 6th place on the University of Dallas scoring list. The Business Leadership major played her first game for the Lady Crusaders on January 15, 2005 after transferring from LSU – Shreveport. In a home game against Rhema Bible College, Cardinal scored 10 points and knocked down 2 three pointers in a 61-49 victory for the University of Dallas. After Monday’s game, Cardinal became the third Lady Crusader to score her 1,000th point in the past two seasons, after two players reached the mark last season.The 9-7 Lady Crusaders have 11 more games left in the season. The Lady Crusaders brought in the New Year on positive note with a victory over the Huntingdon College Hawks, 60-56 Tuesday afternoon in Montgomery, AL. The win puts the team above .500 and snaps a 3-game slide. They have a much needed day off before taking on the Austin College Kangaroos in Sherman, TX on January 3. Game time is set for 6:00pm.Senior guard Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.) led 4 Crusaders in double figure point totals with 16. She also added 5 assists and 5 steals. Cole registered her first double-double of the season by hauling down 10 boards. Roessler, Sczepanski, and freshman guard Erika Derks (Slinger, WI/Slinger H.S.) all finished with 7 rebounds. Roessler also tied Cardinal for the team lead with 5 assists.
The UD women were outlasted by Sewanee Monday afternoon in Montgomery, AL, 55-68. Tied up at 28 at the half, Sewanee outscored the Lady Crusaders by 13 points in picking up the victory. Sewanee shot 50% from the field in the second half, including 3 field goals beyond the arc.Freshman forward Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.) led the Crusaders in scoring and rebounding and put together her third double-double of the season. The University of Dallas Lady Crusaders fell at the hands of the UT-Dallas Comets 67-65 Friday afternoon. UD possessed a 1 point lead (32-21) at the half, before falling behind by as much as 6 to the visiting Comets. The Crusaders charged back late in the second half, but the UT-Dallas prevailed 67-65.Freshman forward Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, TX/Marcus H.S.) led the Crusaders in scoring and rebounding and put together her second double-double of the season. She scored 23 points (9 free throws), and hauled down 10 rebounds. She also added 1 block and 4 steals in the loss. Other notable performances were freshmen Bethany Roessler (Phoenix, AZ/Xavier College Prep) and freshman forward Joirdan Cole (Plano, TX/Bishop Lynch H.S.) with 12 and 8 points respectively. Roessler also pulled down 7 rebounds, while Cole grabbed 6 boards and added 2 blocks.The 6-4 Crusaders have one day off before playing 3 away games in consecutive days. UD trailed by 2 at halftime but outscored the Warriors by 2 in the second half to force the game into overtime. EXPECT TO SEE FRESH NEW FACES this year when the University of Dallas opens the 2007-2008 season at the Austin College’s Bob Mason Tournament. There are only three returning members from last year’s team who will be surrounded by nine incoming freshmen, one junior, and a new head coach. Coach Jen Fleming embarks on her maiden season after spending the last 3 years as an assistant coach at West Point. When asked about her goals for the upcoming season, Coach Fleming responded, “We are all anxious for the start of the season—but we have a lot of hard work ahead of us to learn how to consistently compete at the collegiate level. I am excited about the talent we have and I think we will have an opportunity to surprise a number of teams. We are a very young team and we will need to continue to gain experience and gel as a team in order to reach our potential this year.”The Lady Crusaders will be led by senior captain Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S). Cardinal has been a key contributor since her freshman year and averaged 11.4 ppg in 30 minutes per game last season. Jennifer Fleming was hired as the new women’s basketball coach in an announcement on June 1. The UD women’s cagers have reached double-digit victory totals the past four seasons, but Fleming’s coaching experience is answer in taking the program to the next level. Fleming’s most recent stop came as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for DI Army from 2004-2007. During the 2006-07 season she assisted the Army team to school records for the most victories (24) and longest winning streak (12). Prior to her stop at the USMA, she was the assistant head coach (03-04) and assistant coach (02-03) at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
Winston-Salem, NC - The Association of Division III Independents Atlantic Region Women’s Basketball Championship was played this afternoon at Salem College. The University of Dallas played Salem College in the championship game in front of a record-breaking crowd of 400 fans. The spectators were treated to an electrifying game as both teams raced up and down the court, battling in a very physical and emotional game. With just 6 seconds to go in the game, Lindsay Cross, a first-year student-athlete from Asheboro, NC, grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the winning basket while the Salem College fans erupted from the stands.The Spirits (16-8) won the championship the same way they had won all season long, all five starting athletes scored in double figures. Salem College’s Lindsay Cross and Lauren Redman (Lenoir, NC) led the Spirits in scoring with 13 points apiece while Shakila Springs (Winston-Salem, NC) scored 12 points. Alex Ervin and Michala Michaux, both from Morganton, NC, each scored 10 points. The University of Dallas and Finlandia University played tonight in the second game of the Association of Division III Independents Atlantic Region Women’s Championship. With only 54 seconds to go in the game, Finlandia had built an eight point lead and seemed to be on their way to victory. The University of Dallas had other ideas, however, as Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.) helped lead the comeback with two 3-pointers in just 6 seconds. Senior forward Ana Castillo (Dallas, TX/Ursuline Academy) added to her list of accomplishments by breaking the school career free throw record on February 18, 2007 against the Chapman University Panthers. The record, set by Delilah Whisenhunt with 364 made free throws, is now set at 368. In the game, Castillo went 8-9 from the free throw line and ended with a total of 14 points. Castillo’s season high for free throws is 13 makes. She was 13-16 on January 16 against Dallas Christian College and 13-15 against Colorado College on February 4. She is shooting 78.2% (133-170) from the charity stripe this season.
Senior guard Kristy Malone (Rosenberg, TX/B.F. Terry H.S.) set another record by playing in her 99th game as a Crusader in a 59-58 victory over Southwestern University on February 12th. On February 16th Malone scored her 1,000th point and currently stands in 5th place with 1,084, 19 points behind teammates Ana Castillo (Dallas, TX/Ursuline Academy). Malone also established the records for assists in a season (130 in 04-05) and career with 421.
Determined to avenge an early season 62-74 loss to the Southwestern University Pirates, UD senior guards Kelly Robertson (Eugene, OR/Churchill H.S.) and Kristy “Kip” Malone (Rosenberg, TX/B.F. Terry H.S.) took matters into their own hands. Robertson led the UD offense with 18 points, while Malone added 15. Robertson also secured 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.Not to be left out of the action were fellow starters Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/ Cypress Falls H.S.) and Ana Castillo (Dallas, TX/Ursuline Academy). Although the duo didn’t put up gaudy offensive numbers, they combined for biggest play of the game. With 8 seconds left, Cardinal stole the ball from Southwestern’s Priyanka Kainthla and put up a shot to give UD the lead. Unfortunately, Cardinal missed the jumper but Robertson was there for the offensive rebound. Terry H.S.) led the Lady Crusader’s offense with 21 points and tied the school record set by Alese McKinstry by playing in her 98th game. She also added 5 steals and currently sits in second place in the school’s record books, 49 behind Delilah Whisenhunt. Malone has 1,069 points in the 98 games. Senior forward Ana Castillo (Dallas, TX/Ursuline Academy) and junior guard Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls H.S.) each chipped in 13 points. The UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs outscored the Colorado College Tigers by 8 points in the second half to erase a 5-point halftime deficit to pull out the 61-58 victory. The victory comes on the heels of last night's comeback win where the Banana Slugs, in similar fashion, overtook the University of Dallas Crusaders early in the second half for the 4 point victory. Senior guard Kristy “Kip” Malone (Rosenberg, TX/B.F.Terry H.S.) scored her 1,000th point on a breakaway lay-up late in the second half of Tuesday night’s 76-51 victory over cross-town rival Dallas Christian College. Entering the game 17 points short of attaining 1,000 points, Malone’s basket gave her 18 points for the night and 1,001 in her career. Malone currently stands in 5th place on the career-scoring list at UD. She is 2 points behind Alese McKinstry (1,003) and 25 behind teammate Ana Castillo (1,026).Malone’s milestone is the second consecutive game a Lady Crusader scored her 1,000th point (Ana Castillo), and the third in which a major milestone was achieved (Castillo set the UD career rebound record).Not only do the senior-dominated UD Lady Crusader cagers have a chance to extend their 3-game winning streak next Tuesday against Austin College, both Malone and Castillo get the opportunity to further establish themselves in the UD record books.

With 5:37 remaining in the second half, Castillo reached the mark on a field goal to give her 8 points in the game and 1,001 in her career. Fellow senior forward Taryn Hames (El Cajon, CA/Academy of Our Lady Peace) assisted on the basket. Castillo finished with 10 points, the 12th time this season she scored 10 or more points.After today’s game she has 1,003 points and 726 rebounds. In Wednesday’s 66-56 victory over Millsaps College senior forward Ana Castillo (Dallas, TX/Ursuline Academy) set a new precedent for career rebounds at the University of Dallas by hauling down 12 boards. In a rather inconspicuous play, Castillo’s 6th rebound of the game with less then 1 minute left in the first half gave her the record-breaking number of 715. She added 6 more in the second half to push the mark to 721.Castillo has 136 rebounds (9.1 rpg), 197 points (13.1 ppg), and 22 steals (1.4 spg). The Hendrix College Warriors defeated the USMMA - King's Point Mariners 75-71 in Friday's game of the University of Dallas New Year's Challenge. Tori Huggins led the way for the Warriors with 33 points. Huggins was perfect from the line (15 for 15) and added 4 threes (4 for 5). Both teams had 4 players in double figures, but Huggins work at the lined sealed the 4-point victory for Hendrix. The Crusaders returned from the holiday break with renewed energy and played tough against King's Point -- a notibly taller team. Four Crusaders scored in double digits: Shanie Cardinal (Junior Guard -- Houston, TX) lead the way with 22 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals; Kelly Robertson (Senior Guard/Forward -- Eugene, OR) and Ana Castillo (Senior Forward -- Dallas, TX) were equally tough on the boards and in thir scoring efforts with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 15 points, 10 rebounds, respectively. Kristy Malone (Senior Guard -- Rosenberg, TX) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and a remarkable 6 assists. Meanwhile, Junior Guard/Forward, Angel Noble (Houston, TX) could not have found her shooting rhythm at a more crucial time -- she scored both of her field goals in over time, to finish with 8 points (3-4 FT).King's Point was lead by Morgan Gartner (Junior Post -- Houston, TX) with 16 points and 7 rebounds. She shot 50% from the field and was perfect from the charity stripe. UD takes on Hendrix College Saturday December 30th at 5 pm. Coming off a convincing victory over Greensboro College in yesterday’s semifinal matchup, the Lady Crusaders were unable to hold Hendrix College’s potent offense at bay. Four Hendrix College starters finished in double figures on a team that finished over 50% shooting from the field. Starting guards Kelly Robertson (Eugene, OR/Churchill H.S.) and Shanie Cardinal (Houston, TX/ Cypress Falls H.S.) scored 18 and 14 points respectively in the losing effort. Senior post player Ana Castillo (Dallas, TX/Ursaline Academy) added 10 points and hauled down 8 boards.The 5-4 Lady Crusaders travel to Oregon for games against Linfield College in McMinnville and Lewis & Clark College in Portland. The Linfield game is set for December 20 at 3:00pm and The Lewis & Clark game is on December 21 at 6:00pm.
In the first game of the Hendrix College Classic UD defeated Greensboro College 72-66 in Conway, AR. UD’s balanced offensive attack was instrumental in the victory.Ana Castillo (Dallas, TX /Ursaline Academy) scored 20, Kristy Malone (Rosenberg, TX/B.F. Terry H. Down 36-37 at the break, the Lady Crusaders took advantage of the charity strip by making 17 out of 24 free throws. Castillo was the main benefactor off UD’s ability to attack the rim. UD falls to 4-3 on the season as they played a streaky game against Austin College (also 4-3) on the Crusaders' own floor.The game started out very even, but UD would fall to a 20 point defecit into the second half of the 1st period. Shanie Cardinal (Junior Guard -- Houston, TX) hit a 3 at the buzzer to put UD within 16 going into the locker room at half. She finished with 21 points shooting an impressive 50% from the three. But no one could match the shooting performance of Austin's Maegan Fitzgerald (Freshman Guard -- Denton, TX) who shot 80% from the three (4-5 three pointers) and 8-12 on the game, finishing with 22 points. Free throw shooting kept UD in the game, 75% on the game. Ana Castillo (Senior Forward -- Dallas, TX) went 10-10 from the charity stripe, while Kelly Robertson (Senior Guard/Forward -- Eugene, OR) went 11-17. They finished with 16 and 18 points, respectively. Despite the 3 girls in double-digits, the Lady Crusaders again struggled from the field. They finished just 17 of 60.UD heads out of town for their first away games of the season. They play in Hendrix College's tournament this weekend, starting off facing South Region powerhouse Greensboro College. They will face the winner/loser of Hendrix and Rust College on Sunday. The Lady Crusaders (4-2) snapped a two game losing streak and battled cold first half shooting to pull away and beat the cross-town Dallas Christian College Crusaders. UD shot a frustrating 14.3% in the first half, but bounced back to shoot 48.4% in the second. Senior Guard/Forward Kelly Robertson (Eugene, OR) was the first to light the fire in the second half that set UD up for the win. She finished with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Ana Castillo (Senior Forward -- Dallas, TX) proved to be the most proficient from the field, going 4-9 and then also 7-7 from the charity stripe, for 15 points. She also grabbed 10 offensive boards, for 16 on the game. Dallas Christian College only shot 19% on the game and was lead by Quin Reed (Junior Guard -- Arlington, TX) and her 14 points, 7 rebounds. UD heads into finals week looking ahead to their next opponent, Austin College (Sherman, TX), whom they host December 14th at 7:30pm.

Sophomore Forward from Ridgeland, MS, LaReina Adams, lead the Millsaps Majors with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists in just 28 minutes of play. The University of Dallas Lady Crusaders overcame 16% shooting in the second half to hold on to a win, 72-66, against the Louisiana College Wildcats in the first game of their 2006-2007 season.The Crusaders dominated the first half and all squad members saw action. They entered the locker room at the half up 46-33, shooting 53.6% from the field against Louisiana College's zone defense. Solid free throw shooting (76.5% on the game) would prove to keep them ahead in the second half, despite the struggles offensively.
