The Ph.D. Program of the Institute of Philosophic Studies
Embarking upon a study of classic texts in a doctoral program at The University of Dallas is a remarkable process. From the Bible and Aristotle to Faulkner and Heidegger, the Institute of Philosophic Studies of the Braniff Graduate School offers a rigorous exploration of what constitutes a life of integrity and insight. The IPS program offers degrees in philosophy, politics, and literature. A specific canon of great texts of the Western intellectual tradition forms the basis for a core curriculum, which is then augmented by a study of one of the three specific disciplines mentioned above. A study of literature, for instance, is enhanced and defined within the refractory light of philosophy and politics. Similarly, philosophy and politics are examined within a purview that is annealed in the greatest literary works of the Western tradition. Courses in contemporary politics are an integral part of the program. Just as Aristotle's Politics contains careful political analyses of the ancient Greek cities, so today the philosophic study of politics must provide an account of contemporary political life.
