Ruth Callahan

Meditations from Alpha Centauri

Ruth has a BA in Anthropology with a minor in Studio Art and an MA in Museum Studies.   She has worked in ceramics, painting, print making, 3-D art, and other media. Ruth is an active member of the Quilt Guild of Arlington and the Etcetera Art Quilt Group.

Tennie Callahan, Ruth's grandmother, was a professional tailor. Tennie taught Ruth how to sew and instilled in her the joy of working with fabric. In the mid-1970s, Ruth's mother gave her an unfinished Depression era quilt top and it sparked her interest in quilting. Through research and experimentation, Ruth gradually learned how to decipher quilt patterns, assemble the tops and do the hand quilting. Quilting feeds her creative urge and challenges her to push the limits of color, shape and texture.

Currently, Ruth's work is included in a group quilt exhibit in the Gallery Space at Stage West Theater in Fort Worth, sponsored by the Etcetera Art Quilt Group.

Her art quilts are in private collections in Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Texas. In May 2012, she participated in the Quilt Guild of Arlington's annual quilt show, winning several awards.

Ruth works as the transcript clerk in the registrar office at the University of Dallas. She has been serving in this position since 2007. You can contact her through e-mail at: callahan@udallas.edu or phone 972.721.4059.
