LEAD

Leadership Effectiveness Assessment and Development

The LEAD program is designed to enhance your leadership and interpersonal skills. The LEAD process begins with the LEAD360, an assessment that will help you recognize your leadership strengths and areas for development. A faculty mentor will meet with you to interpret the results. Once equipped with your LEAD360 results, you may select from a menu of LEAD courses to help you enhance your strengths and address deficiencies. LEAD courses meet for a full day on Saturdays, and are 1/2 credit each. You are required to take a minimum of two courses as part of your graduation requirements.

The LEAD program is an exciting opportunity to help you become a more effective manager and successful business leader.

What is LEAD and what will it do for you?

1. LEAD is a series of one-half (.5) credit-hour classes designed to enhance leadership and interpersonal skills in graduate students.
2. A 360-Degree Assessment will be offered to new students (and current students who have not yet completed BUAD 5199) or current students who have completed BUAD 5199 but seek additional leadership training. The 360-Degree Assessment will identify areas of strength and developmental needs in your leadership style. You will receive feedback on the 360-Degree Assessment and be able to use the results to help identify LEAD courses that will assist in your personal development. You will receive your personal feedback report at one of the 360-Degree Assessment Briefing Sessions, which will be held throughout the trimester.

How many LEAD courses will I have to complete?
There will be a variety of LEAD courses taught, and you must complete two of these to fulfill degree requirements in the Graduate School of Management (but you may certainly take all of them if you like). Each class will be taught in a Saturday intensive format for one Saturday session only (7 hours – but we’ll give you a break for lunch). You will register for these courses in Banner just like any other course, pay just like any other course, and receive a grade just like any other course.

What if I want to complete more than two LEAD courses?
There is no limit to the number of LEAD courses a student can take. Students completing six LEAD courses will receive a special certificate indicating they have completed the UD Graduate School of Management LEAD program.

What if I’ve already registered for the Lecture Series and haven’t completed it yet?
Never fear, we will still offer keynote lectures, the Ethics Lecture, and online lectures through the Summer 2007 term. This should give everyone plenty of time to complete their current Lecture Series requirements. You must complete the requirements by July 30, 2007, to receive credit for 5199.

What if I want to switch to LEAD instead of completing 5199?
You will not receive a tuition refund for 5199, but you may certainly register for as many LEAD courses as you like at your own expense. As long as you take at least two LEAD courses, we will use these to fulfill graduation requirements in place of 5199.

What if I’ve attended all the lectures but have not yet registered for 5199?
You must register for 5199 by April 9, 2007, in order to receive credit for these lectures. If you do not register for BUAD 5199 by April 9, 2007, you will not receive credit for the lectures and you must register for LEAD.

What if I graduate this Spring term and haven’t taken 5199?
You have an option – you may register for BUAD 5199 or take two LEAD courses to complete your requirement.

How does tuition work for LEAD?
Tuition is currently $522 per credit hour. Each LEAD course is .5 credit hours or $261.

What’s the purpose of the 360-Degree Assessment?
The purpose of the assessment is to give you feedback on your management style and how it may affect your work, those that you work with, and your work environment. You may use the information provided as a basis for considering changes in your management behavior. The specific results may be used to create a personal development plan and as an aid in helping you to choose the best LEAD courses to help you develop your personal and professional skills..

Do I have to complete the 360-Degree Assessment?
The 360-Degree Assessment is not mandatory, but strongly recommended in order to help you with your personal and professional development.

Is there a charge for the 360-Degree Assessment?
No – there is no charge for the assessment. It is one of the benefits we offer to our students.

Do I have to follow the recommendations for the assessment?
You do not have to follow the recommendations – they are simply to aid in your development. You may take any LEAD courses you wish.

What do I do to complete the 360-Degree Assessment?
After you register for the trimester, you will receive an e-mail with instructions on the 360-Degree process. When you receive this e-mail, you will also receive instructions for registering for LEAD 6L00. This is a special course that will be used solely for the purpose of providing you information on the 360-Degree process. There is no charge for registration, and you will not receive a grade.

When do I have to register for LEAD?
In order for you to reap the most benefits from the LEAD courses (as well as your regular coursework), we strongly recommend that you complete your LEAD courses within the first two terms of registration. Registration for LEAD will take place just like registration for any other class and will appear on the course schedule just like any other class. You may register online for the courses when you register for your other Graduate School of Management courses.

Do I get financial aid for taking LEAD courses?
Because they are for-credit, LEAD courses do count in your credit-hour load towards financial aid; however you must maintain the minimum number of credit hours to qualify.

What happens if I register for a LEAD course but do not attend?
If you are unable to attend a LEAD course you’ve registered for, you will only receive a refund if you drop the day prior to the class meeting. If you do not drop it the day prior, you will not receive a refund of tuition and you will receive a grade of NCR (No Credit Received). If you are unable to drop online via the Banner system, contact the Office of Student Records via email at srecords@gsm.udallas.edu.

Does an NCR grade affect my GPA?
NCR grades are only used when you fail to attend a LEAD seminar. Your GPA will not be affected.

What if I’m an online only student? I don’t see any LEAD courses online.
You’re right. This being the first term that we’ve offered LEAD, we don’t have any online just yet. We will have select LEAD courses available online in the Summer 2007 term. You may take the LEAD 6L00 360-Degree Assessment this term and follow it with your LEAD courses in the Summer.
