CLEP and Challenge Exam Frequently Asked Questions
What are CLEP and Challenge Exams? CLEP exams are standardized tests that may be taken for specific course equivalency. These exams cover material usually taught in the first two years of a bachelor's degree program. Challenge exams are designed to test whether the student has mastered the subject matter of a particular course based on work experience, prior academic experience or some other source. Passing a CLEP/Challenge exam is a means to satisfy a foundational knowledge course but it is NOT A SUBSTITUTION for actually taking the course. The objective of the exams is to verify your claim that you know the material and, therefore, do not need to take a particular course.
Why take CLEP/Challenge exams? There are numerous benefits to CLEP/Challenge tests. They provide an opportunity to earn college credit in a short amount of time. This saves tuition costs and shortens your time in the MBA program. Instead of paying full tuition for classes about a subject in which you are already proficient, you can take a CLEP/Challenge test and start with more advanced classes.
How much do CLEP/Challenge exams cost? The cost of the CLEP/Challenge exam is $70 each, a fraction of the tuition and fees for the corresponding course.
How will CLEP/Challenge exams appear on my transcript? When you take and pass a CLEP/Challenge exam that is equivalent to the Foundational Knowledge courses, that Foundational Knowledge course will appear on your transcript as a course waiver. No letter grade is attached to the test score and CLEP/Challenge credits are not added to the GPA (grade point average). Earned credits are added to the student's permanent academic record and are applied toward the total required credits needed to graduate.
How many credits can I earn through CLEP/Challenge exams? A total of 12 credit hours (8 Foundation courses valued at 1.5 credit each) can be earned by standardized examination or equivalent course waiver. There are four CLEP Subject Exams that can be taken to satisfy 6 credits of Foundational Knowledge courses and six Challenge Exams that can be taken at the University of Dallas to satisfy 9 credits. The equivalent courses, if taken at the Graduate School of Management, are worth 1.5 credit hours each, for a total of 12 hours.
Can CLEP/Challenge exams be used to test out of any course? CLEP/Challenge exams may only be used to satisfy the eight Foundational Knowledge courses: Foundations of Economics, Financial Accounting, Information Technology, Managerial Accounting, Management Science, Management & Strategy, Marketing, and Statistics. Credit received will be treated as waivers.
A student may receive credit by examination for a course in which s/he has been registered at the Graduate School of Management and received a "D", "F", "Audit", "W" or "Incomplete". The grade received in this course will remain on the student's transcript and be included in the cumulative GPA calculation.
What study resources are available to prepare for CLEP/Challenge exams? To fully prepare for the CLEP exam, you might obtain a copy of the textbook used by your college for the corresponding course. You may also purchase one of the CLEP Individual Subject Guides ($10, subject to change) in downloadable electronic format at http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/prep.html.
To fully prepare for Challenge exams, the University will recommend any information, topics and suggested textbooks that can assist you in preparation for the exam. It is up to the student to obtain your own copy of the textbook and to review the material if you wish.
When should I take CLEP/Challenge exams? It is highly recommended that CLEP/Challenge exams that satisfy Foundational Knowledge courses be taken at least 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the term. This allows us time to receive your scores and process the corresponding course waiver credit. The Foundational Knowledge courses are not required for acceptance, but must be satisfied while you are in the early stages of the MBA degree curriculum.
Where can I take CLEP/Challenge Exams? To find a location and register to take your exam(s), visit http://apps.collegeboard.com/cbsearch_clep/searchCLEPTestCenter.jsp. The scheduled dates for Challenge exams are to be determined at a later date. Please contact your Admission Executive for more details.
How soon are the test results available? The scores for CLEP/Challenge are generated immediately after the end of the exam, so you will know whether you have achieved the minimum score required to earn course waiver credit. You will receive a score printout following the exam. With CLEP you have the option of canceling and not sending the test to the institution if your score does not meet our minimum score requirement. We will accept your unofficial score report from CLEP until the official copy arrives from ETS.
Can I retake a CLEP/Challenge exam? If a student fails a CLEP exam, the student must wait at least 6 months before retaking the exam. If a student fails a Challenge Exam, the student can retake the exam during its next offering, there is no waiting period. Challenge exams can only be taken twice. If you do not achieve a passing score on a Challenge exam the second time, you will need to either take the undergraduate equivalent as a post-graduate at another university or the equivalent Graduate School of Management Foundations Course.
