Sustainable Practices at DFW Airport: Making Dollars and Sense - Rusty Hodapp (DFW Airport)

The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is one of the premier commercial aviation facilities in the world and a key element in the national aviation system. DFW is also the established economic engine of the North Central Texas region generating over $14.3 billion in total economic output annually along with 268,500 jobs. Like many industries, airports have long been impacted by resource, community and land use issues. However, debates on aviation have often been dominated by environmental issues.

The concept of sustainable development with its framework for balancing economic, social and environmental effects provides for a broader approach to issues facing the industry. The DFW Airport Board plays a unique role requiring a balance between its public policy obligations and bottom line results for its business partners. Consequently, it is no surprise that DFW has successfully and increasingly turned to sustainable practices to satisfy the diverse interests of its stakeholders. From energy efficiency to materials reuse to waste minimization, DFW has applied sustainable practices to achieve results benefiting the region, the local community and the bottom line.

This presentation will provide insights into how DFW Airport has used and benefited from the application of sustainable principles and practices.

Creating Value Through CSR - Mr. Jim Thomas (JCPenney)

The valuation of many companies today are centered around intangibles. Included in these intangibles are a company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and their reputation. The importance of measuring, managing and communicating the value created by a CSR program is discussed.

Practical Sustainability - Mr. Gary Olp (GGO Architects)

Mr. Olp will offer a global perspective to substantiate the need for a sustainable approach to building and living. As a recipient of many energy efficiency and sustainability awards and having acquired LEED Gold, and LEED Silver Certifications for many buildings Mr. Olp will focus this presentation on identifying the critical decision making methodology that will identify the most significant aspects of any building project that are eco effective in terms of cost and environmental impact.

He will clarify many of the initial design decisions that need to be addressed before a line is drawn; which of those are opportunities for long term efficiencies and conservation; which may only benefit the environment and thereby are social equity decisions and which will directly affect the health and well being of the occupants. Several built examples of LEED Certified buildings and other sustainable examples will be presented for discussion.
