History and Characteristics
Mission:
The University of
Dallas is dedicated to the pursuit of wisdom, of truth and of virtue as the
proper and primary ends of education.
The University seeks to educate its students so they may develop the
intellectual and moral virtues, prepare themselves for life and work in a
problematic and changing world, and become men and women able to act
responsibly for their own good and for the good of their family, community,
country and church.
History:
The original charter of the University of Dallas dates from 1910 when the Vincentian Fathers took that name for the Holy Trinity College they had founded five years earlier. This charter became dormant in 1929 was revived in 1955 when Eugene Constantin Jr. and Edward R. Maher Sr., induced Bishop Thomas K. Gorman to have the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas take over sponsorship with ownership by a board of trustees.
The new University of Dallas opened its doors to 96 students in September 1956, on a 1000 acre tract of rolling hills located northwest of the city of Dallas. In Fall 2002, the university enrolled 1218 undergraduate students in its Constantin College (undergraduate liberal arts), and 1952 graduate students in the Graduate School of Management and the Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts. Students came from 49 states, the District of Columbia, and 68 countries.
In 1988, the University of Dallas became the youngest university in America to receive a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools came in 1963 and was reaffirmed in 1973, 1984, and 1994. In 1996, UD was the first university accredited by the American Academy of Liberal Education.
Constantin is a selective liberal arts college. The 2002 freshman class consisted of 308 students, 123 men and 185 women, with an average SAT score of 1175 and average ACT score of 25. The most popular undergraduate majors were English, Biology, and Politics.
The Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts offers 11 masters degree and a doctoral program with concentrations in literature, politics and philosophy.
The Graduate School of Management offers MBA and Masters of Management degrees both on campus and on-line. The students are primarily part-time working professionals.
