UD's Spanish Program celebrates the splendor of the Hispanic World, of Hispanidad. We concentrate on the grand, the heroic, the poetic, the creative, the artistic, the holy, the stoic, and other admirable facets of the legacy and contemporary reality of Spain and Spanish America. Our Program also offers an interdisciplinary approach to Hispanidad through courses in Spanish language, literature, history, linguistics, and art history. Finally, we examine the tension between the unity and the rich diversity within the Hispanic World.
You may choose to study Spanish as your core language, or you may decide to pursue a concentration (minor) or a full-fledged major in Modern Languages/Spanish. It is also possible to combine a Spanish major with the Business "Through Plan," by which the student acquires a B.A. in Spanish language and literature after four years and an M.B.A. from the College of Business in one additional year.
Language Skills: The study of language is an integral part of most of our courses. We focus on language skills in courses at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels, and we have high standards of proficiency.
Independent Research and Honors Thesis: Senior Spanish majors write a paper in Spanish on a topic of their choice in literature, history, art history, linguistics, or other disciplines. Outstanding majors may be invited to write an Honors Thesis.
Travel/Study Abroad: Spanish students at U.D. have various opportunities to travel and study in the Hispanic world. The University has excellent immersion programs in Spain and Mexico.
Scholarships: If you have a good background in Spanish and are interested in being a Spanish major or concentrator, you may compete for a Departmental Scholarship. We invite you to contact us (972-721-5367, Dr. Alexandra Wilhelmsen) or the Office of Enrollment at the University of Dallas to schedule an on-campus interview.
