Monumental bronze doors, such as those on the Pantheon, provided both protection and ceremonial entrance, and were familiar in the ancient world. Interest in fabricating great doors emerges again across Europe after the year 1000. Florence stimulated a major impetus to the renewal by its commissioning a competition for the doors for the Florence Baptistry. While seeing these great bronze doors by Ghiberti and Pisano in Florence is a stunning experience, the biblical stories are told in amazing relief sculpture surrounded by quatrefoil frames. The exhibition photos are from The Doors of Florence by David Finn.
