Student Government

"The Board of Trustees of the University of Dallas hereby establishes the student body of the Constantine College and its elective governing body, Student Government, as the structure by which undergraduate students may collectively participate in shaping the quality of student life within the University."
--Student Government Charter

Mission

The University of Dallas Student Government functions as the representative assembly of the UD student community. The purpose of UD Student Government is threefold:

  1. Promote the general welfare of the University and the Student Body through its support of the University's mission, ideals, and values.
  2. Communicate student concerns and interests to appropriate University Committees and to the University Administration.
  3. Sponsor programs and services to enhance campus life.

Guided by the mission of the University and in accordance with the teachings and principles of the Catholic Church, SG strives to foster a healthy and enriched campus environment and to build up a strong student community. The representatives in SG are dedicated to enhancing the quality of student life by promoting both the academic and social traditions of the University. Student Government is committed to serving the interests of the UD student, and it is important to stress that those of us in SG are always willing to hear your voice so we can bring your ideas and opinions to the rest of the University community. SG looks forward to getting you, the students, more involved in campus life, and so we encourage you to contact us with any questions that you might have.

History

Student Government was established in 1956 by the Board of Trustees as the official means of communication between the students and the faculty, staff, and administration. It consists of three distinct, but connected branches.

The Senate, consisting of representatives from each undergraduate class, residence halls & student apartments, commuters, and the Holy Trinity Seminary. The Senate and Executive Council meet weekly to discuss important student issues and concerns and provide innovative and effective responses. All Students are always welcome to attend.

The second branch, SPUD (Student Programming at UD) consists of eight committees: Traditions, Academics, Musical Entertainment, Socials, Sound, Publicity, Associate, and TGIT. The SPUD Chairs are assisted by a host of VIPs (Volunteers in Programming) drawn from the student body. Together, members of SPUD plan and run the majority of events on campus, from the weekly TGITs to the annual Mallapalooza.

The third branch, the Executive Council, oversees the actions of the first two. The Executive Council includes the President, VP of Senate, Director In Charge of Programming, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Executive Council ensures that SG as a whole runs smoothly. The President particularly meets with administrators, the VP of Senate presides over the Senate, and the Director In Charge of Programming leads the SPUD team. The Secretary is the de facto coordinator of the Mentoring Program, and the Treasurer ensures responsible handling of SG funds.
