Meet the RA's

Resident Assistants are upperclassman that supervise the residence halls they are assigned to. They are the first point of contact for residential questions and concerns, and are responsible for the general welfare of the students living in their hall. If you have any questions, concerns, or just want to talk, feel free to knock on their doors or write them an email.

RA 2014-2015Anthony Masterson

Why did you become an RA?:

I wanted to be an RA because I wanted to gain experience as a
leader and to help freshman feel at home at UD.

What events are you planning to hold?:

I hope to continue holding Madonna Open Mic nights, and also to put on an intense Halloween Treasure Hunt on the university grounds.

 John-Anthony Harwerth2014-2015 RA

 jharwerth@udallas.edu

From: Irving, Texas

Why did you become an RA?:

I believe that it is very important for freshman to have a great first year, and I want to help with that.

Sporting events and film discussions

RA 2014-2015Kevin Fitzpatrick

Theology Major

kfitzpatrick1@udallas.edu

From: New Orleans, Louisiana

Why did you become an RA?:

I wanted to become an RA so that I could get to know more of the underclassmen and help them to come to love UD as much as I have over the past three years.

What events are you planning to hold?:

I would love to host movie nights, a pushup and/or pull up contest between the male residence halls, a barbecue at the volleyball court, and lectures from UD staff members about things not strictly academic. I think it would be great to hear about things like Fr. Denis' experience in the Hungarian army over fifty years ago.

Theresa Hall

Brandon AshtonRA 2014-2015

bashton@udallas.edu

Pastoral Ministry Major

From: Phoenix, Arizona

Why did you become an RA?:

I wanted to be an RA to allow my social skills and leadership ability to flourish through the grace of Christ. He has given me these gifts, and I cannot let them just sit under a bushel basket. Also, I want to be able to help the incoming freshman class find solid ground when they come into UD.

What events do you plan to hold?:

One thing for sure is a seminar on manliness and what is means to be a man. Ideally, I would have the author of the blog: The Art of Manliness come in to talk, but I may just have some monks from the Abby come and talk, like Father John or Father Thomas. Also, I want to do  a frisbee tournament, or, if I can work it out with student life, take them rock climbing at the NTOPC.

ra 2014-2015Timothy Nguyen

Why did yo become an RA?:
I wanted to be an RA because I would be able to help the freshmen love their new school.

Some specific events I plan on holding in Theresa Hall would be cooking events of different cuisines and dishes and holding a weekly or biweekly talk show, similar to that of Jimmy Fallon's or Jimmy Kimmel's.

Why did you become an RA?:

I love serving others and being an RA will give the chance to do that, even if it is in small ways such as unlocking a door for someone who forgot her room key.

What events do you want to hold?:

Make your own sundae event and a theology of the body talk and discussion.

RA 2014-2015Sarah Kuntz

skuntz@udallas.edu

Human Sciences in the Contemporary World Major

From: Virginia Beach, Virginia

Why did you become an RA?:

I wanted to become an RA because of the sense of community gained by living in the dorms. As a Freshman, I really appreciated everything that my RA's did for us. It helped me to feel more at home at UD. Our dorm was like a mini-family. I loved knowing that I had people who I could trust and rely on. I hope to do the same thing for everyone in Gregory Hall this year!

What events do you plan to hold?:

Some of my current ideas for hall events are art therapy, tea
parties, Disney movies, Zumba sessions, chick-flicks, Open Mic,
Breakfast in "Bed", poetry nights, inviting professors over for casual discussions and more!

Teresa Blackman RA 2014-2015

tblackman@udallas.edu

English Major

From: Minnesota

Why did you become an RA?:

My RA's helped me make the transition into college life, and I would love to help the freshmen in the same way. I also want to help foster a friendly and caring environment in the dorms!

What events do you plan to hold?:

Anything with food! I'd love to have study parties, dorm Secret Santa, a brunch, and service work together.

RA 2014-2015Sarah Valdovinos

svaldovinos@udallas.edu

Interdisciplinary Studies Major

From: Portland, Oregon

Why did you become an RA?:

As the oldest of 8, I see the RA position as a "big sister" role, in a way. I enjoy new responsibilities and challenges, and I love people. I want to help the incoming freshmen and take an active role in helping them get acclimated to university life and housing so as to help make their transition as smooth as possible. As much as I can, I'd like to build a personal rapport with each student in the hall, so she feels like she's an important member of the UD community.

What events do you plan to hold?:

A Christmas party (with Christmas movies and a dorm-wide "Secret Santa" gift exchange) right before Christmas break; a Valentine's Day party with a "Secret Cupid" gift exchange; Thanksgiving and Easter dinners (I plan to cook for and eat with the students who are staying in the hall during these breaks); various craft/decorating parties (I love crafts and have many ideas I think students would enjoy); various movie nights; and at least one or two outdoor events (weather permitting), like a scavenger hunt with prizes, or a picnic on the grass outside the hall.

Mathematics Major

From: Madison, Minnesota

Why did you become an RA?:

I have wanted to be an RA since ninth grade when I went on a college visit with my older sister. I watched the interaction between the RAs and their residents and thought to myself 'I want to do that.'

What events do you plan to hold?:

Girls' night; coloring party; Rome panel.

The West Hall

ra 2014-2015Teresa Miranda

rmiranda@udallas.edu

Pastoral Ministry Major

From: Las Cruces, New Mexico

Why did you become an RA?:

I wanted to be an RA because I am a transfer student and had a
rough first semester. I want to make sure other people's living
situations are better than my semester was. It makes a huge
difference when you feel comfortable in your own room.

What events do you plan to hold?:

I would love to start a nightly prayer group.

Karen Blessra 2014-2015

kbless@udallas.edu

Theology Major

From: Allen, Texas

Why did you become an RA?:

I really enjoy meeting new people and interacting with them. I also truly love helping people, and being an RA gives me the opportunity to be the go-to person. I want to be someone that anyone can talk to, anytime. And I want my residents to know that I will always be there for them.

What events do you plan to hold?:

I want to have game nights, movie nights, and take a group out into Dallas for an afternoon in the city.

RA 2014-2015Michael Reardon

mreardon@udallas.edu

Philosophy and Psychology major

From: St. Louis, Missouri

Why did you become an RA?:

Going on a second year, I want to be able to continue getting to know the residents and be there to help them out in the transition of returning from Rome. I've also liked getting to know them personally and recommend clubs and activities to incoming transfer students that would fit their hobbies.

What events are you planning on holding?:

I would like to hold a barbecue this upcoming year, and have a pool party some night before it gets too cold.

Michael McDermottra 2014-2015

mmcdermott@udallas.edu

Business Major

From: Olympia, Washington

Why did you become an RA?:

The experience of leadership, greater contact with the student body, and family legacy.

What events do you plan to hold?:

Lots of Movie Nights, Foam Gladiatorial Contests, and of course Poker.

ra 2014-2015Elizabeth Spencer

espencer@udallas.edu

Business Major

From: San Antonio, Texas

Why did you become an RA?:

RA's have great responsibility and are held to a higher standard. I enjoy staying busy and being held accountable. I also enjoy helping others and acting like a role model to them and being someone they can go to should they need anything.

What events do you plan to hold?:

I would love to do a girls vs. guys sporting event. We could start it in the afternoon and then have a BBQ for dinner right outside in the West Hall court yard. Also, I've always loved movie nights; especially around the really hectic times of the year. It's a chance for students to just relax and take a break from studying.

Yesenia Anayara 2014-2015

yanaya@udallas.edu

Philosophy/Pre-Med

From: Garland, Texas

Why did you become an RA?:

Becoming an RA was one of the things I was interesting in doing going into college. I like interacting with people and learning new things. I also don't mind lending a hand, ear, or whatever to someone who needs it or asks for help. Becoming an RA gives me the opportunity to meet and help new people and friends alike.

What events do you plan to hold?:

I hope to hold some stress-free parties. Work and school can get overwhelming at times and having a stress-free environment can help a lot. Movie nights are probably on the top of my list because I think it is a great way to unwind or even hold an interesting discussion about whatever is the movie is about.
