Preparing for medical school is something that should be done with forethought, but it should not be a full-time occupation. Your primary purpose in college is to get a good education. The college experience, if held in the proper light, can enhance your life and in many ways make you a better person. If you treat college as a mere stepping-stone to medicine or any other career, you are defeating the purpose of your liberal education. That having been said, it is also true that preparation for a career in medicine should not be done haphazardly at the last minute, either.

One thing which you should do early is to learn as much as you can about medical careers. As you will find out, the question "Why do you want to be a physician?" comes up all the time during the application process, and you should have a good answer for it. After all, you could end up spending the rest of your life as a doctor. So talk to doctors and medical students about their experiences. Visit a hospital or get a job in a doctor's office. If you know classmates who have applied to medical school or who have been accepted, ask them about what you can do to learn more about the medical field. There are plenty of things you can do painlessly right now to educate yourself about medicine. Preparation for your career is your responsibility. No one else can, or should, do it for you.
