September 11: Colosseum & Roman Forum

FL13 Roman ForumUD Rome professor Dr. Freni brought Ancient Rome to life for the Fall 2013 students during a day-long visit to some of the city's most important monuments, notably the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. The day began in the Forum where the students studied the functions of buildings such as the Temple of Vesta, the Senate House, and the Rostra (or Speaker's Platform). The visit also included recitations of Mark Antony's funeral oration from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar performed by Kay Zadnik, Isabella Fojut, Christopher Fiore, and Taylor Garcia. After a quick lunch the students gathered at the Colosseum to hear about the exploits of gladiators, the suffering of Christian martyrs, and Stoic philosophers' negative response toward the gladiatorial games.
