Art & Architecture at the Galleria Borghese

Wednesday 23 April found the Spring '08 Romers at the Galleria Borghese - perhaps Rome's most beautiful art gallery. Students of the Art & Architecture class were there to continue their study of the Baroque style, with close-up examinations of the Gallery's six Caravaggio paintings and its numerous sculptures by the young Gianlorenzo Bernini (see photo below).

The afternoon trip began with a lecture given by Dr. Laura Flusche. Students heard about the history of the Galleria Borghese and were introduced to a concepts and vocabulary necessary for understanding and talking about Italian Baroque art.

The group then entered the museum and spent two hours spellbound by the sculptural masterworks of Bernini, such as the Apollo and Daphne, the Pluto and Persephone, and the David, as well as wonderful paintings by Caravaggio such as theBoy With A Basket of Fruit, the Saint Jerome, and the David and Goliath.
