Friends of UD Catholic Theology

We have a 4-fold purpose:

  • To keep informed, primarily by e-mail, with a regular update of what the theology department is doing, such as: special events, a theological idea, a faculty profile, a commentary on a Catholic news item, answers to your questions, etc.
  • To have a forum for your concerns and questions.
  • Prayer--the department and our students appreciate your keeping us in your prayers!
  • awareness and promotion of the department's identity and mission (as described below).

Theology Department Mission and Identity

We are and continually strive to be:

~ Scripturally and historically rooted

~ Philosophically astute

~ Ecumenical

~ Orthodox

  • We offer an intellectually rigorous Catholicism: "always have your answer ready for the people who ask you the reason for the hope within" (I Pt 3:15). While we often refer to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, our task is not primarily a catechetical one, but a theological one.
  • Our mission is the recovery and renewal of the Catholic theological tradition in harmony with the Magisterium and in dialogue with contemporary thought. Everything we do is in harmony with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. Since we know who we are, we are especially capable of dealing with the profound questions of modern and contemporary thought.
  • We integrate the four fields of theology: Scripture, History of Christian Doctrine, Systematic Theology, and Moral Theology. We treat all topics of these four fields within the living Catholic faith.
  • We read Scripture, and classics from Aquinas, Athanasius, Augustine, Bonaventure, de Lubac, John Paul II, Newman, Ratzinger, Therese. In the "UD Core spirit" we focus on original texts. For Theology, these include the texts of the Magisterium.
  • We are happy to be at UD, where one finds a great Catholic environment that both nurtures one's faith and stimulates the mind.
  • We love to teach--watch us at work! To see video clips of our professors click here.
