Discover Fall 2020

Joe Gigler, MBA '80

To say that the year 2020 has been an interesting year would be a huge understatement. And it would be a tremendous understatement to say our faculty, staff and students have simply taken care of things. The pandemic has meant that we live at work, work where we live, and for many, take classes wherever we can. For our faculty and staff, that meant moving off campus in the spring, working remotely in the summer, and teaching in a highly flexible educational model this fall. I am proud to say our faculty and staff have done an exceptional job working and teaching on campus, from their homes, and from places in between to ensure we meet our students’ needs. Earlier this month, we held our annual college planning day via Zoom; while we were unable to all be together, the spirit of innovation and student focus rang true. It is because of this spirit and focus on changing the lives of the men and women we serve – our students – that I am proud to serve as the dean of the Satish and Yasmin Gupta College of Business.

Joe Gigler, MBA ’80, wouldn’t be the successful business owner and philanthropist he is today without John and Elizabeth “Babe” Hrivnak. “They were just classic American entrepreneurs, with integrity and morals,” he said. “They worked day and night. Babe ran the front of the store, and John was the butcher and bought the produce. They were humble people with the most incredible sense of generosity.”

It was this sense of generosity that inspired Joe and his wife, Carol, to commit over $400,000 to support the John and Elizabeth “Babe” Hrivnak Memorial Endowed Scholarship for MBA students.
