Dear UD Faculty and Staff:
Thank you for your work in helping us over the finish line and creating an especially memorable commencement weekend for our Class of 2021 graduates. I am so grateful for all of your work in making our campus, our graduates, and our university shine this past weekend.
As you know, in light of the CDC’s latest guidance for those who have been fully vaccinated, we shifted our policy for Commencement from “mask required” to “mask optional, but encouraged.” I have decided to extend this mask-optional policy for Irving employees and visitors, both indoors and outdoors, and remove the requirement of social distancing, as the CDC guidance states. We should, however, out of charity for others, continue to have a mask on-hand and at the ready for situations when we encounter others who are wearing a mask.
Additionally, I have accepted the recommendation of our COVID Preparedness Committee to remove the requirement for all campus visitors to register and complete a COVID questionnaire. However, departments within our UD community who frequently encounter outside visitors, such as our Admissions office, may continue to require visitors and staff to mask given they are most likely to interact with those outside of our community who may not be vaccinated.
I want to give a special word of thanks to our COVID committee for their tremendous commitment and critical guidance over this past year. The committee will take a hiatus from its weekly meetings over the summer, but it is planning to reconvene in July to determine additional recommendations to make regarding our COVID protocols for the fall semester in light of the latest conditions and information available at that time.
Thanks to each of you for your extraordinary work in making this year, one fraught with challenges, a resounding success.
