Deacon as Minister of Charity

From the earliest beginnings of the Church the deacon has been the minister of Charity. Their first call was to minister to the Hellenistic widows and orphans at table. Since then the diaconate has grown and evolved as deacons serve their fellow parishioners as servants to the poor, caretakers of resources to those in need and companion on the last days of one’s journey. Charity is the hallmark and charism of the deacon - be it gathering resources, or working to eliminating injustice. Who a deacon is ever more important that what he does. His liturgical ministry flows from his charitable works. Participate in the discussion how a deacon is different is his calling to Holy Orders.

Getting to the Head and the Heart of the Matter

How do educational best practices impact learning and growth in faith formation? Growth in the brain and the heart invites the learner into a relationship with and, ultimately, a conversion to Jesus Christ. Catechesis in a religious education program involves an invitation to discipleship and calls for the use of an evangelizing catechetical process. This dynamic methodology leads to an integration of faith, and higher levels of thinking thereby encouraging choices based on faith. This workshop will focus on some of the latest findings on how children learn through educational best practices and its impact on learning related to faith formation.

Empowering Parents in Their Role as the Primary Disciplers of their Children

Study after study has conclusively shown that the person who will have the greatest impact on the faith life and practice for a young person isn’t their youth minister, or teacher, or coach, or even their priest – it is their parents. Some have gone as far as saying that if you want to know what a teen’s faith is going to look like when they grown up, just look at their parents, because a vast majority of teens will “mimic” their parents faith. In this session we will explore the tremendous power that parents have for imparting faith to their children, and simple, practical ways you can help them claim and exercise that power in the day-to-day circumstances of their life.

Forming an Authentic and Relevant Discipleship Program Within Youth Ministry Settings

Discipleship seems to be the buzzword these days - everyone is talking about it and experimenting with new ways to do it with teens. To be effective though, there are some critical foundations stones that must be in place for authentic discipleship in your ministry with youth. This session will cover an in-depth understanding of the process of conversion, the placement of discipleship efforts in that process, the critical earmarks of a discipleship approach, the four areas of formation that need to be addressed, and the essential dynamics of a healthy and safe environment for authentic discipleship.

The Relationship between Evangelization and Catechesis

Although the words “Evangelization” and “Catechesis” have been used within the Church for centuries it is common to encounter some ambiguity, confusion and disagreement regarding the meaning of these terms. This presentation will attempt to convey the meaning of Evangelization and Catechesis as the Church understands them. The nature and content of Evangelization and Catechesis will be discussed as well as the relationship between these two distinct though not separate ministries. We will explore the reasons why not all evangelists are catechists but all catechists must be evangelists. Finally, we will briefly touch upon the essential difference between theology and catechesis and how the work of the theologian differs from that of the catechist.

The Story of Salvation History as the Context for All Catechesis

In this presentation the importance of handing on the Story of Salvation History in all areas of catechesis will be explored. The Road to Emmaus event will be upheld as a model of catechesis, especially for the New Evangelization. We will look at what happens when the framework of Salvation History is not established in catechesis and contrast it with a catechesis properly situated within the context of the wonderful works of God throughout history. We will also look briefly at the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the sure norm for teaching the faith, as it situates all doctrine within the context of Salvation History.

Technology isn't the only way to engage children, teens or even adults. Catechesis that is engaging and incorporates peer coaching creates an environment of not just learning, but opportunities for conversion. Pope Francis has asked us to not be "sourpusses". Using catechetical strategies which foster community, build self-esteem and present our Faith in life-giving ways helps participants learn to live their faith out loud. Kagan Structures© have changed the way public schools teach. Participants will learn at least three innovative ways to teach, reinforce and review.

Thinking, Living, and Praying Green: Environmental Action Rooted in Catholic Faith

Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment is in the headlines. But how do we communicate an understanding of care for creation that is truly rooted organically in our Catholic faith? First and foremost, we need to understand the core content of Scripture and Catholic beliefs that are the foundation. These direct us to living out two vocations as part of our human dignity: to order creation rightly, and to share possessions generously. But trying to live out these vocations as Scripture describes will lead us to recognize patterns in our own culture and our lives that are distorted and destructive to God’s creative and redemptive work. Identifying these distorted patterns in our lives and in our parishes, and a call to change can be seen in our participation in the prayer of the Church’s sacraments, which offer counter-patterns to encourage us toward a renewed care for creation.

As part of contemporary culture, ministry leaders often experience burn-out, economic stress, widespread depression and anxiety, high pressure, and chronic busyness. In short, we sometimes find it difficult to simply be still or rest. Find out what elegant provisions God makes for His children in the Scriptures. In this talk we discover that frequent times of refreshing are not only a welcome luxury but a spiritual discipline, so that our gifts and calling can be fully unleashed into a languishing world.

Confirmation: Sacrament of Champions

The Sacrament of Confirmation has been called by some "the sacrament in search of a meaning." Confusion abounds about what it means, why we need it, and what age is appropriate for its administration. This talk by Marcellino D'Ambrosio cuts through the confusion and brings out, in a lively and dynamic way, what the Scriptures and the Catholic tradition reveal about this powerful anointing of the Holy Spirit. Illustrating throughout from his own experience, Dr. D'Ambrosio shows how this sacrament is the key to understanding many dimensions of Catholic truth from the priesthood of the laity to the call of all Catholics to share the love and truth of Christ to the unique role of the bishop as successor of the apostles.

Evangelize Like The Master: From Disciple-Maker to Disciple-Maker-Maker

Evangelization is key—that much we know. Regardless of age or generational difference, the average Catholic sitting in our pews week after week cares not what we know until he or she knows that we care. But once the relationship is built and the ministry begins, where do we go from there? Further, how are we to maximize our efforts as individual ministers when the mission field is so vast? The answer may be closer than you think. Rooted in the Gospel, this workshop will inspire you to create a master plan of evangelization based upon the core strategy that Jesus used. Attendees will walk away with the knowledge and skill set of how to craft a plan for parish discipleship that can be implemented to succeed.

Cuidado Pastoral, retos y oportunidades

"Come to me...and I will give you rest."

The Bible often speaks of “rest.” God takes time to enjoy it. Old Testament prophets look forward to it. The people of Israel are commanded to observe it. Jesus invites his disciples to come away and join him in it. The Lord also offers it as a gift to all who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens. And the faithful are promised it as a reward. Rest! This session reflects on the biblical concept of “rest” and explores its significance, not merely as a preparation for more work, but as something to be embraced now and an end to be anticipated, enjoyed and shared with our God.

Pope Francis: Ministry Defined by Mercy and Compassion

When he became pope, Francis chose the motto he used as bishop: "Miserando atque eligendo," “with mercy, chosen.” In a homily given four days after his election, Pope Francis declared that, "Mercy is the Lord's most powerful message!" Also, he waited until three weeks after his election - until Divine Mercy Sunday - before formally celebrating his accession to the episcopal throne. And on that marvelous occasion, Pope Francis took the opportunity to proclaim anew his witness to and his experience of God's mercy. These and other examples from the beginning of Francis’ pontificate indicated that divine mercy and compassion would be at the heart of his ministry. This session focuses on the central place that mercy and compassion have, not only in the life and work of Pope Francis, but also should have in the life and work of every Christian minister.

Understanding, Living, and Proclaiming Luke's Gospel in Cycle C (2 Hour Session)

Each of the four Gospels provides a distinctive narrative portrait of Jesus in answer to the question of who Jesus was (and is). Luke's answer is distinctive among the four Gospels in a number of fascinating ways, including his emphasis on Jesus as the prophetic messiah and savior who reaches out to the lost and marginalized in society. These christological accents carry over to Luke's vision of what it means to follow Jesus. This two hour session on Luke will draw out and highlight the distinctive ways in which Luke presents Jesus and talks about discipleship. The goal is to make the world of Luke's Gospel more familiar for incorporation into the life of faith.

Glorifying the Lord by Our Lives: Liturgical Music, Discipleship, and Mission - HANDOUTS

Well-chosen and capably performed liturgical music fosters a well-rounded spirit of discipleship that challenges us to work for justice, to embrace the marginalized, to strive for holiness, to become bearers of God’s abundant mercy. How can an eclectic and well-balanced repertory of music nurture and sustain faithful disciples as we strive to further Christ’s mission in our ever-changing world? How can a parish musical repertory get out of balance?

Holy Harmony: The Ministry of Choir and Ensemble - HANDOUTS

Congregational singing is an integral part of liturgical celebration, but choir and ensemble members with a love for music, a generous heart, and a commitment to rehearsing add a level of musical richness that an unrehearsed congregation can’t provide on its own. How are choirs and ensembles called to minister to the assembly? What challenges do they face? How do singers and instrumentalists find the right balance between perfection in performance and authenticity in prayer?

Path to the Table: Preparing Baptized Adults for Reception into Full Communion - HANDOUTS

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, at its core, is designed for the preparation of unbaptized, uncatechized adults for Christian initiation. What about adults who have been baptized in another Christian tradition and now seek to be received into the Catholic Church? Their path is different. How can we honor their baptism, nurture the grace already present in their lives, and prepare to welcome them to the Eucharistic banquet?

Skills for Good Pastoral Ministry

Good ministry often comes under the category of “you know it when you see it” but how do you get there? We know that good pastoral leadership is pastoral, prophetic, welcoming, collaborative, and ethical. Studies of pastoral leaders have shown that there are specific skills for these qualities that can enhance our ministry and ways of caring for others. This workshop will look at each of these five qualities and offer practical suggestions for putting them into practice.

Catholic and American

Since the colonial period of American history, the relationship of Catholic and American has often been problematic. In its simplest narrative form, some considerations of self-conscious American political and ideological foundations have suggested an enduring Roman Catholic incompatability with an American ethos described as open and skeptical, progressive and experimental. How, for example, can a celebration of individual freedom and the persisting pursuit for self-autonomy and, more recently, one's own truth, co-exist with a faith equally self-conscious of its own tradition of hierarchical and authoritative leadership, claim to revealed universal truth, and the embrace of a universal natural law? The fundamental issue of Catholic and American remains very much with us today and can be traced through several historical examples since the 17th century.

Embracing the Heart of Our Catholic Identity

Since Vatican II, the call for us to become more ecumenical has helped us to recognize all that we have in common with our sisters and brothers of other faiths. Although this has facilitated in bringing the human family of God together in building the reign of God on earth, it has, also, left many Catholics wondering “So, what makes us unique as Catholics?” “How do we identify ourselves as Catholics?” This presentation will discuss some of the fundamental ways in which our Catholic Identity is best expressed and how we might strengthen our capacity as a Church to be true to the demands of the Gospel.

Motivator, Model, Minister...Catechist, Who Do You Say You Are?

This session is for both parish and Catholic school catechists. As Jesus asked the apostles, “Who do you say that I am?” he, also, asks the same of us. Who do we say that Jesus is? And, the question we must ask of ourselves is “who do we say that we are as his disciples?” The way we answer that question helps define who we are as believers, as Christians, as Evangelizers, as people of faith. It determines how we identify ourselves as teachers, as catechists. In this presentation, the role of catechist as motivator, role model and minister will be discussed in light of Jesus’ call to catechetical ministry.

Today the diocese embraces nine counties and has a population of about1,200,000 Catholics. Landregan will tell the story of how this portion of the Lord’s vineyard has developed and been tended by men and women, laity and clergy during the first century and a quarter. "Ars Praedicandi" -- Mining the Rites and Symbols of Eastertide

If, as Vatican II emphatically asserts, Eucharist is "the source and summit" of the Church's liturgical life (SC, #14), the Easter season is the privileged time for celebrating Eucharist in its greatest power and beauty. This session invites preachers, catechists, liturgy planners, RCIA teams, and all who seek to deepen their embrace of the Resurrected Lord to consider the treasure trove of symbols and rites celebrated during "The Fifty Days" from Easter to Pentecost. Practical reflection and dialogue will spark new ideas for celebrating this live giving season of wonder and grace.

"Proclamation of God's Wonderful Works" -- the New Homiletic Directory and Sunday Preaching

No one disputes the vital importance of the Sunday homily for the spiritual life of parishioners and preachers alike. The new "Homiletic Directory," published by the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship in June, 2014, offers clear and concrete assistance to preachers in fulfilling this central task. This session introduces participants to the structure and content of the "Directory" and helps make the connection to the real life work of preaching and listening to rich, illuminating homilies. It focuses especially on the vision of the Sunday homily as the benchmark for all forms of preaching. Through dialogue and reflection, participants will interact with the text of the Directory and their own experience of “God’s wonderful works.”

Breaking the Code - Academic Language Therapy at St. Monica - Co-presenting with Krisztina Shields

Every year we have several children identified as struggling readers or diagnosed with dyslexia. Without receiving academic language therapy, these children would not be able to keep up with the increasing exposure to written text and consequently, these otherwise bright and fully capable students would be battling failure as early as 3rd and 4th grade. The goal of our presentation is to familiarize the audience with current research findings on reading problems and dyslexia, to demonstrate the importance of early intervention, as well as to describe our mission at St. Monica. The speakers will explain the specifics of student enrollment in the Take Flight program along with the details of implementation. The audience will learn about the realities of being dyslexic, how coping mechanisms are utilized by our students and the results we achieved through language therapy.

Science and Religion

We live in a time when scientific knowledge, discoveries and technologies shape our world in most profound ways. Yet our religious imagination and theological reflection often fail to take all this into account. Our Catholic tradition, based on an authentic dialogue between faith and reason (fides and ratio), offers us opportunities to participate in a process of conversation between science and religion. This presentation will explore how such a conversation deepens our faith as St. John Paul II said, "Our mutual concern for the full truth about the origins and destiny of the universe and of humanity can be both a foundation and stimulus for more dynamic dialogue between religion and the natural sciences." This dialogue is well worth exploring.

Where Catholicism is Headed: Five Trends that Will Affect Your Parish, Ministry and Personal Faith

Despite frequent challenges it faces in the media, few would deny that the Catholic Faith is a serious force in the world. The Church in the United States has particular influence in the universal Church, primarily due to the economic strength and entrepreneurial spirit present in the United States. Given this, it is important for Catholic leaders to understand the key trends occurring in the Church, both here and abroad, and how these trends are impacting our parishes, ministries, and faith journey.

Bridging the Gap: Liturgical Catechesis for Special Needs - HANDOUTS

We worship a ‘disabled God.’ The twisted, distorted, disfigured image of Jesus on the cross shows how God allowed himself to become disabled and at the same time completely accessible to human beings in need of healing. We can see the disabled child or adult in God’s likeness. “All persons with disabilities have the capacity to its truth within the community of faith and offer valuable gifts. Their participation enriches every aspect of Church life. They are not just recipients of catechesis- they are its agents.” National Catechetical Directory 49. This workshop will provide insights into special needs in your parish and how we can welcome these individuals, catechize them, and grow from those encounters

Effective Ministry Leaders LEAD with their God-Given Strengths!

As leaders, how often do we try to keep giving, even when we are feeling depleted and empty? Renewed energy can be found when we integrate this challenge from St. Matthew: "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16 (NRSV) Effective ministry depends upon our willingness to trust that God, through our prayerful relationship with and total dependence upon Him, has gifted us with all that we need to serve His people. How do we know if we are fully using our God-given talents? How do we hone these talents into strengths for ministry? Together, we will focus upon ways to ensure that your ministry is flowing from your personal strengths - while always remembering, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13 (NRSV)

RCIA: Pastoral Concerns

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is rightly praised as a gift to the Church. Implementing RCIA for over four decades has uncovered several pastoral challenges. This session will explore some of the concerns associated with catechesis and ritual celebrations in the RCIA. For example, the training of catechists and coordinators, defining RCIA as a series of topics to be taught, confirming children of catechetical age, reducing the catechumenate to a school year model, putting adults with vastly different formation needs into a single group, by-passing either the periods of evangelization or mystagogy, and skipping the ritual formation that constitutes RCIA are current practices that call not only for pastoral reflection but also for pastoral attention. Come and see what is at stake with the failure to fully implement the RCIA.

Marriage as a Workshop for Everyday Saints: Real Wisdom from Real Married Couples

This presentation shares wisdom gleaned from research on marriage conducted in twenty, Midwestern parishes, resulting in Project Holiness: Marriage as a Workshop for Everyday Saints (Liturgical Press, 2015). Grounded in the testimony of couples (who were recognized by other parishioners as “models of holiness”) the book identifies virtues, values and practices that lead to flourishing marriages and to the holiness of married partners. These couples: delight in and nurture Christian friendship; celebrate life-giving, erotic love; foster a sacramental vision that embraces everyday holiness; practice mercy; suffer together in faithfulness and hope; and model fidelity in a culture that often overly-romanticizes marriage and views relationships as temporary.

This workshop will help clergy, lay ministers, catechetical leaders, church staff and volunteers to encounter the person of Jesus Christ through conversation with others. This is especially helpful for those who minister directly to people in person and even over the phone. If we allow the Holy Spirit to work through us, give us words the other needs to hear and guide our conversation, we will be amazed at the sacred conversation that is revealed.

Creating a Welcoming Adult Faith Formation Environment

Is it enough to have a pertinent topic and a gifted speaker; might there be additional components to consider for successful adult faith formation? Refreshments? Yes, but is there more? Many people will say that welcoming and hospitality are key factors in belonging to a parish, in getting involved, in participating in offerings, especially adult faith formation. What really creates a welcoming environment? Who has responsibility for it? Does the focus/feeling of all of parish life influence participation in adult faith formation? Let’s explore these questions and more.

Google Classroom is the latest learning management system from Google and is especially beneficial to Google Apps for Education (GAFE) schools. Google Classroom is only available for GAFE schools but attendees are encouraged to join the session if they are exploring adding GAFE to their campus. Participants will learn how Classroom takes minutes to set up (simply give students join code) for each class. Attendees will actually become a part of a test classroom, participating from a student perspective. Participants are able to get a true demonstration of student interaction with teachers within the program. Attendees will also set up their own Google Classroom (if they have access through their own GAFE school). They will share resources with students including assigning/grading lessons, and emailing students. They will see how Google Drive (Docs/Sheets/Slides/Forms) easily integrate with Google Classroom. Teachers will see improved organization with ease in communication, announcements, and email.

Breaking the Code - Academic Language Therapy at St. Monica - Co-presenting with Lori Luna

Commissioning a Liturgical Artist - How, Why, Where, What, When

In this session, you will learn: 1) How to commission an artist, 2) Why go to the trouble, 3) Where to find the perfect artist, 4) What to expect from your artist and what they expect from you, and 5) When to bring the artist in on the project. Designing, remodeling or improving your parish is a once in a lifetime event for most. This presentation will help take the fear out of finding the perfect addition to your project as well as explain why you need a liturgical artist. We will talk about the creative process and spiritual journey encountered as you collaborate to design sacred images. We will also look at the differences between catalogue art and truly custom art and explore the possibilities that sacred art can reveal the holy presence of God. Shelley will also tell you her own spiritual journey and " how do you know you can't until you try?"

Life Issues in Real Life

Today’s culture lives a “feel good” mentality and the meaning of suffering for the sake of a higher good has been lost. Pleasure is sought over sacrifice and life is protected or thrown away based on convenience instead of the intrinsic value of the gift of the human being created in the image and likeness of God. How do some of the life issues such as euthanasia, reproductive technology and abortion apply to our teens? Each person is called to build a Culture of Life but that is easier said than done. Gather inspiration on how to guide your teens on a path to making life affirming moral decisions. Gain insights on how their lives are being impacted by these life issues. Today’s teens face constant temptation to accept the lies of the culture. Give them the tools to say yes to life.

Embracing Our Brokenness

In anticipation of the upcoming Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, how might we contemplate the mystery of God’s mercy? In this session, we will examine the virtuous journey of embracing the brokenness of the bodies God gave us. In our brokenness, we can experience our uniqueness and participate in the mystery of Christ’s redemption. And by embracing our brokenness, we might open up ourselves to receive the mercy that God so graciously offers us. Participants will be guided through personal reflection on the Psalms to enhance their pastoral approach to catechesis.

Your Spiritual Backpack:Spiritual Necessities for the Journey - HANDOUTS

Pope Francis tells us that “Joy is a pilgrim virtue…a gift that walks on the path of life” and that proclaiming joy “lengthens and widens that path” (Homily, 5/10/13). While the catechetical mission relies on the transmission of truth, effective methodologies, and clarity in doctrine, we cannot succeed without proclaiming joy (not to be confused with happiness). Julianne Stanz will explore 6 key necessities for sustaining our own joy, the keys to being joyful leaders and authentically spreading this joy to others. Just as hikers need essential resources in their backpacks in order to fully enjoy their pilgrim path, we must be sure that our catechist’s backpacks are filled with the spiritual necessities needed to proclaim a joy that lengthens and widens the pilgrim path for all those we serve.

Discerning the Call to Ministry: But What Ministry? Sacramental, Pastoral or Social?

In this presentation, we will identify God’s individual call to ministry as well as discuss the boundaries that identify the ministry to which I am being called. Pope Francis states that we are “Mission Disciples”; we are not identified by our passport but by our baptismal certificate. Therefore, we are all called to the mission of Ministry. Our call as the Body of Christ is to continue the mission of Jesus, building His Kingdom. What do we do about our confusion in searching for our call if we find ourselves bouncing between jobs that we think are ministry?

Evangelization Through the Sunday Homily: But is Anyone Listening?

As a priest or deacon, do you sometimes feel your homily was a home run? And, then other times you are left wondering if everyone has mentally left the building? From books titled: Why Nobody Wants to Go to Church Anymore, to studies that show how learning has morphed from lecture based to bilateral and interactive, what’s a pastor or deacon to do? Join us in this breakthrough session as we maintain the understanding that the homily moves us more deeply into the mystery of God so the assembly, nourished for Christian living, is formed for witness into the world (from the Catholic Encyclopedia). At the same time, we will examine relevant topics and issues for today’s Catholic and investigate how best to engage them in the homiletic message. Attend this session and let’s talk and learn!

Marriage: Pastorally and Canonically does it really matter?

In light of the Supreme Court decision on same sex marriage, the World Synod on the family, and the Synod in Rome…It certainly seems to matter to a lot of people. The Church universal honors marriage as a God given gift. The Church in the United States has invested significant resources to offer a response to divorced couples that honors both the needs of people and the truth of marriage. This session will help clarify what some of the real issues are in the American pastoral reality…and what can be done in response.

Who Will I Be Tomorrow: Growth, Trail and Change

“This isn’t where I thought I would be!” “Alright God, you are asking me to do what?” “I am not sure I can handle another life change without losing it.” These might all be questions or statements that have run across your heart in one form or another during your time in ministry or life in general. This session will allow each of us to see the events occurring in our lives today which shape us into the people we will become tomorrow while living in the “DST”(Divine Standard Time). Greg’s own personal testimonial of God’s call to move him from corporate life into ministry will springboard the conversation to a discussion of looking at our lives in reverse to be reminded of blessings which did not seem like blessings at the time. Pope Francis is deeply concerned about the family as the basic cellular unit of our society and how we can protect and preserve it. During this session, I hope to recap some of the main points that came out of Pope Francis’ visit in Philadelphia and speak to some of the challenges the Bishops will be discussing in October when they meet in Rome for the Extraordinary Synod.

Understanding the Mass: Lifting Up Our Hearts in the Liturgy of the Eucharist

Every Sunday, from week to week, the Body of Christ gathers in our parish churches, and we enter into the most important experience we will have all week long. After hearing the Word of God proclaimed, we are invited to “lift up [our] hearts” in the great prayer of praise and thanks that is the Eucharistic Prayer. This session will explore the elements and the dynamics that make up the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Understanding the Mass: The Theology of the Liturgy of the Word

Saint John Paul II has referred to the Liturgy of the Word of the Mass as the great “dialogue between God and his people.” This dialogue serves very specific purposes and has a very particular role – it is never simply a reading of some event that happened once, a long time ago! This session will explore the spirituality and theology that is operative whenever the Body of Christ gathers, and the Scriptures are read aloud in the Church.

Connected Toward Communion: A Practical Theology of Communication for the Church in the Digital Age

This presentation offers an invitation for how to begin thinking about our digital culture theologically and pastorally. For engaging with digital culture, this presentation situates the question in the theology of communication, draws on some of the wisdom of Church documents on social communication, and shares about what the Vatican is doing in terms of social media and digital culture today. This presentation is rooted in the speaker's recent book Connected Toward Communion: The Church and Social Communication in the Digital Age (Liturgical Press, 2014.)

Facing Violent Words: Engaging in a Prophetic Ministry of Digital Communication

This presentation focuses on the reality of online verbal violence as a significant impetus for why our churches should be concerned about having a digital presence. In light of the violent word online, the urgency to go digital is less about the fear of being left behind in digital culture, and more about bringing a prophetic voice to digital communication, one that communicates truth and hope, and brings Good News to our digital culture.

Spirit-Filled Words and Listening Hearts: Faithful Communication in Digital Contexts

This presentation focuses on spirituality as the lens through which to explore digital culture and communication. It builds on the fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5) as a way to discern the shape of faithful communication in our digital culture and draws especially from the wisdom of the Benedictine tradition to explore the virtue of listening as part of digital encounters.
